ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Manager, Schools Services, the Nutrition Educator is responsible for teaching food selection, budgeting and food preparation skills, co-ordinating food security initiatives, providing nutrition education sessions and promoting and supporting healthy eating. The Nutrition Educator plans, develops, co-ordinates and implements food and nutrition programs and services across Healthy Living.
WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING
- Works under the lead of a Public Health Nutritionist, while working independently, to plan, develop, co-ordinate and deliver food and nutrition programs, services and projects as outlined in the Mandatory Health Programs and Services Guidelines under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
- Supports a variety of nutrition across York Region in a variety of settings to promote comprehensive nutrition environment and increased food literacy. Develops and maintains teaching resources, food and nutrition education sessions for staff, volunteers, program participants and community groups to meet the identified needs, including food selection, menu planning, budgeting, food preparation skills and nutrition education.
- Supports the annual Nutritious Food Basket survey.
- Partners with Nutrition Services staff to work on other food and nutrition projects and campaigns, including the planning, development, and staffing of food and nutrition displays at fairs and community events.
- Attends and actively participates in team meetings.
- Supports program planning and collaboration across program areas.
- Provides and/or assists in planning food literacy campaigns and delivering food and nutrition workshops in the community on a wide variety of topics.
- Provides training sessions to community groups on food preparation and preparing nutritious food.
- Participates in staff and community partner meetings.
- Works with school leaders, school councils and school child nutrition committees to support current sites and assists in the development of new student nutrition programs.
- Lends support to parents and community groups who want to promote improved healthy eating in schools, day cares or community settings.
- Collects and collates evaluations of program activities and prepares reports.
- Provides orientation and support to new staff members.
- Provides field experiences for students and dietetic interns.
- Maintains food and nutrition knowledge by individual study and by participating in continuing education sessions.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Baccalaureate of Science degree in Food and Nutrition from an accredited university.
- Two years experience in areas related to program assignments including teaching food selection, preparation skills, community presentations and small group facilitation with diverse groups.
- Knowledge and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer focus, communication, collaboration and personal ownership.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s licence, and a reliable vehicle for use on corporate business.
- Knowledge of food, food science, menu planning, food preparation techniques, kitchen equipment, food safety and budgeting.
- Knowledge and demonstrated hands-on experience in developing and facilitating food skills training workshops.
- Knowledge of healthy eating and nutrition.
- Knowledge of the impact of social, income, economic, environmental and cultural issues in food access, food selection and food preparation.
- Ability to multitask at program sites.
- Demonstrated ability in teaching and small group facilitation skills with diverse groups.
- Computer literacy in a Windows environment with proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and internet searches.
- Ability to work flexible hours, outside of normal business hours.
