Position Title: Nutrition and Dietary Supervisor

Employment Type: Full Time, Non-Bargaining Unit Position

Under the direction of the Manager of Nutrition and Dietary Services, the Nutrition and Dietary supervisor assumes the responsibility of providing the basic and intermediate levels of nutrition care to all residents within the facility. Functions as the primary communication link between the Manager of Nutrition and Dietary Services and the front line staff.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise the daily activities of Nutrition and Dietary Services including the supervision of staff assigned to the area.
  • Consult with the Manager of Nutrition and Dietary Services on all aspects concerning food and nutrition services.
  • Develop nutritional care program for residents, including nutritional screening and assessment protocol to identify and monitor residents at moderate and low nutritional risk levels.
  • Monitor all procedures for resident meal service to ensure the required standards are maintained.
  • Ensure that the nutrition care provided to residents is consistent with the plan developed.
  • Visit residents during meal times to monitor resident acceptability of food.
  • Maintain the resident database and generate associated reports and labels.
  • Establish coding for RAI programs and creation of RAP reports.
  • Maintain records of non-residents meals and functions.
  • Ensure that all menus are posted and filed in compliance with current guidelines.
  • Monitor food services to residents to ensure that all food handling practices meet guidelines for quality, safety and sanitation.
  • Ensure all dietary staff has current Food Handler Certificate.
  • Assist in catering functions.
  • Organize and participate in in-service training activity as appropriate.
  • Interpret residents’ nutritional needs to production staff and service staff.
  • Issue specific supplies to other departments upon request.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the Continuous Quality Improvement Plan for the Nutrition and Dietary Services.
  • Control inventory and purchases of food to maintain adequate stock levels while controlling costs.
  • Prepare purchase orders for food items to be purchased from regulated and approved sources.
  • Ensure proper handling of leftover foods after each meal.
  • Ensure that dietary staff demonstrates sanitary, safety and infection control procedures.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Participate in committees when requested.
  • Assist in menu planning and nutrient analysis.
Qualifications
  • Diploma in Food and Nutrition Management from a recognized program.
  • Current membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management.
  • One-year previous experience in long-term care.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Solid knowledge of therapeutics nutrition as it relates to the needs of the long-term care population.
  • Genuine interest in the care of the elderly and the disabled.
  • Must be flexible and willing to respond to the needs of others.
  • Able to work independently without supervision and exercise initiation and judgment.
  • Be a team member as part of the multidisciplinary approach to the overall care of the long-term care residents.
  • Understand the dietary needs of the residents in our LTC facility.
  • Fluency in English and Chinese is an asset.
