Job description

Nurse Practitioner, Medical Oncology - Pancreatic

BC Cancer
Vancouver, BC

You're on a professional mission to reduce the burden of cancer in your community and beyond. As a person-centred nursing professional, you are dedicated to supporting individuals undergoing cancer care, along with their families and friends. Working with a team of like-minded healthcare colleagues who value compassionate care and innovation enhances your workdays as you share successes and challenges with support, kindness, and excellence in care.

At BC Cancer, Nurse Practitioners (NPs) work in diverse settings with various populations. NPs manage care during active treatment, palliative care, and post-cancer care. They mentor medical and NP trainees, and other healthcare staff, participate in research clinical trials, and lead patient-focused research initiatives. They are integral to leadership, role development, and evaluation.

Most NPs at BC Cancer serve diverse cancer patient populations, including hematological, lung, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, breast, brain, and head and neck cancers. Some have a generalist focus, providing primary care, surveillance, and end-of-life care. Currently, 22 NPs work across BC Cancer in full and part-time roles.

Nurse Practitioners collaborate with clients and healthcare teams to identify trends affecting health, develop strategies to improve health outcomes, and participate in policy-making. They engage in peer review, maintain professional development, and uphold registration standards.

What you'll do
  1. Diagnose and treat undiagnosed diseases within your scope, order and interpret investigations, develop treatment plans, and provide emergency care as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  2. Prioritize health management, provide follow-up care, communicate diagnoses and prognoses, and support clients and families emotionally and informationally.
  3. Collaborate with physicians and other providers, accepting and making referrals as appropriate.
  4. Prescribe medications within regulatory standards, applying pharmacological knowledge to treatment.
  5. Contribute to research, synthesize health data, and implement evidence-based screening and health promotion strategies.
What you bring
  • Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with BCCNM.
  • At least four years of recent, relevant clinical experience.
  • Understanding of Indigenous health disparities, systemic racism, and commitment to anti-racism and cultural safety.
  • Knowledge of legislative and provincial commitments related to Indigenous Peoples and health equity.
Core competencies
  • Leadership in addressing systemic racism and embedding Indigenous cultural safety in practice.
  • Familiarity with social determinants of health and Indigenous-specific anti-racism initiatives.
Additional qualities
  • Ability to perform full NP duties, define practice scope, and communicate effectively with patients and teams.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning about Indigenous health issues and systemic racism.
What we offer
  • Opportunities for professional growth, mentorship, and ongoing education.
  • Supportive work environment with state-of-the-art technology and evidence-based treatments.
  • Comprehensive benefits, wellness programs, and employee perks.
