Job summary

The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto seeks a Nurse Practitioner to lead family-centered care within the Division of Haematology/ Oncology, focusing on the Solid Tumour inpatient population. You will guide complex care, coordinate treatment plans, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.

• Completion of a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner program.
• Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario within the RN (Extended Class) in good standing.
• 3 - 5 years of clinical nursing experience in pediatrics.
• Previous leadership/mentorship experience promoting quality improvement and patient safety.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive health care to pediatric patients in the Solid Tumour inpatient population.
• Care for highly complex patients including those on early-phase trials and immunotherapy.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team including physicians, fellows, nurses, social workers and therapists.
• Work in an acute inpatient setting (8A, 5D/6E) and promote continuity of care.
• Integrate advanced nursing practice with medical knowledge.
• Create, utilize and disseminate new knowledge.
• Lead clinical nursing practice improvements and advocate for patients and families.
• Coordinate plans of care with the team and adapt to evolving treatment needs.

We are currently looking for a Nurse Practitioner to join the Division of Haematology/Oncology to provide leadership and promote excellence in family-centred nursing care through the five main NP role components of expert practice, education, research, consultation, and leader/change agent. This NP role will support the Solid Tumour inpatient population. You will be a member of a high-functioning and collaborative multi-disciplinary team.

Here’s What You’ll Get To Do

• Provide comprehensive health care to diverse patient populations cared for by the Solid Tumour section, including newly diagnosed patients, those on therapy and patients at the end of life.
• Care for highly complex patients including patients enrolled on early phase clinical trials, those receiving immunotherapy and patients receiving treatment in the division's MIBG suite.
• Collaborate within an interdisciplinary team that includes staff physicians, fellows, physician assistants, nurses, social workers, psychologists and physiotherapists.
• Work within an acute, inpatient care setting including 8A and associated satellite units (typically 5D or 6E).
• Integrate nursing and medical skills and knowledge within a broad scope of advanced nursing practice.
• Create, utilize and/or disseminate new knowledge.
• Assume a leadership role, influencing clinical nursing practice and the provision of high-quality, safe care.
• Drive care continuity as a consistent care team member on the unit and be an advocate and communication liaison for patients and families.
• Help guide child/family through their treatment course and coordinate the plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
• Opportunity to collaborate with the broader Haematology/Oncology inpatient team, providing occasional cross-coverage to other sections as needed.
• Opportunity for mentorship and professional development provided by interdisciplinary teams but also Advanced Practice Nurses within the Haematology / Oncology Program and wider hospital APN Council.
• Integrate research and quality improvement into practice.
• Identify and link to services and resources in community.

Essential Requirements

• Completion of a Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner program
• Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario within the RN (Extended Class) in good standing
• 3 - 5 years of clinical nursing experience in pediatrics
• Previous experience in a leadership role providing mentorship and educational support, promoting continuous quality improvement and patient/team safety
• Ability to act as a change agent, and foster teamwork and consensus
• Innovative critical thinking with excellent communication, public speaking and problem-solving skills
• Adaptable to work within different team environments and clinical settings
• Knowledge of theoretical frameworks and research application
• Ability to cope with potentially challenging situations in terms of patients with a poor prognosis and those requiring end-of-life care
• Demonstrated commitment and actions in advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion objectives

Assets

• Experience in Haematology/Oncology, chemotherapy administration, and palliative care is an asset
• Requirement for GCP training and training on individual study protocols
