The salary range for this position is CAD $74.45/Hr. - CAD $81.90/Hr.

The Heart Centre at St. Paul’s Hospital (SPH) is British Columbia’s comprehensive referral centre for patients with heart disease, a major teaching facility for cardiac professionals, and a leader in understanding and treating heart disease. With a full spectrum of treatment and care, including surgery, transplants and rehabilitation, Providence Health Care (PHC) is also host to multiple services, programs, and resources dedicated to advancing heart/lung health. The Cardiac Surgery service at SPH is one of the largest centres in the province and provides tertiary and quaternary level care for complex cardiac surgery patients from across British Columbia. In addition to routine coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and valve procedures, the SPH Cardiac Surgery program provides some unique and innovative services including

  • Off-pump CABG
  • Laser lead extraction
  • Complex valve replacement and repair, including alternative access approaches
  • Surgery to address various adult cardiac surgery conditions
  • Procedures that combine expertise of both cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology teams


Reporting to the Nurse Practitioner Department Head for professional issues, and Program Director for operational issues, the Nurse Practitioner, Cardiac Surgery

  • Provides professional guidance to other healthcare professionals, works autonomously and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Makes referrals to specialist physicians and other resources as necessary.
  • Collaborates with patients and healthcare professionals to identify trends and patterns that impact the community’s health.
  • Participates in evidence-based strategies to enhance healthcare services.
  • Contributes to policy-making activities influencing healthcare practices.


Please be advised that we have full-time (1.0 FTE) and part-time (0.50 FTE) positions available.

Education

  • Current registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals.
  • Completion of the Basic Cardiac Life Support Course, Level C.

  • A competitive salary $74.45-$81.90 per hour, depending on NP experience.

Your Day to Day

  • Diagnoses and treats previously undiagnosed patients for undifferentiated diseases, disorders, and conditions within the Nurse Practitioner's scope of practice; writes orders for treatment and medications; provides first line care in emergencies and continuous care.
  • Monitors ongoing care, orders appropriate screening diagnostic investigations; interprets reports of investigations and analyzes information to monitor progress and plan treatment.
  • Establishes priorities for management of health, diseases, disorders, and conditions; provides follow-up treatment; communicates with patients and families about health findings, diagnoses and priorities, outcomes and prognoses; supports and counsels patients in their responses to diseases, disorders and conditions.
  • Collaborates and consults with physicians, the health care team and social service providers to determine the appropriate resources necessary for patients status. Develops and implements treatment plans. May admit and discharge patients to facilities according to medical staff bylaws.
  • Initiates treatment including health care management, therapeutic intervention and prescribes medications within the statutory and regulatory standards, limits, and conditions for Nurse Practitioners and within applicable employer policies and procedures.
  • Assigns work to other nursing and health care personnel; evaluates work and provides education and supervision as necessary; hires staff, and evaluates staff performance.
  • Participates in research and quality improvement contributing to patient care and advances in nursing, health policy development and population health.
  • Maintains population health focus by implementing screening and health promotion activities for populations at risk.
  • Participates in the education of nurse practitioner students and other health care professionals through preceptorship, role modelling and knowledge development and exchange in clinical practice, in classroom environments, and community environments to foster health care partnerships.
  • Develops implements, and evaluates policies and procedures related to nursing, interdisciplinary care, and health system practices.
  • Completes Encounter Records for the purpose of evaluating Nurse Practitioner implementation as a requirement of the Ministry Of Health.
