CAPS Collaborative is looking for a dynamic Nurse Leader. This is a 206-day per year position.

About the role:

To develop, implement and manage the CAPS Collaborative School Health Program consistent with MA state guidelines, regulations and statutes governing school health.

The Nurse Leader serves as both a clinical leader and a practicing school nurse, ensuring high standards of healthcare are provided to students while also guiding and supporting the nursing team. This role involves a blend of administrative oversight and direct student care within the school setting.

Responsibilities:

      • Ensure that CAPS Collaborative complies with state-mandated service activities, e.g., screenings (vision, hearing, postural, height, weight, BMI). Coordinate screening programs and immunization status review/follow-up.
      • Coordinate and participate in the establishment, review, and implementation of school health services, policies/procedures according to state guidelines and laws.
      • Prepare health reports for the Department of Education and the Department of Public Health
      • Attends all Regional and Statewide CSHS meetings.
      • Participates in ongoing professional development and education provided by the School Health Institute for Education and Leadership Development (SHIELD).
      • Implement communicable disease control in school, including monitoring, surveillance, and disease prevention and outbreak management in the school.
      • Maintain up-to-date and accurate student health records according to state law.
      • Inventory and maintain nursing supplies to programs. Monitor all nursing department purchases.
      • Act as a resource person to staff, parents and students regarding health, safety, and nutrition.
      • Maintain correspondence with the school physician, keeping standing orders current.
      • Schedule regular nursing staff meetings to update nursing policy/procedures and ensure uniformity of service delivery.
      • Maintain professional boundaries and ensure student/staff confidentiality as appropriate within the educational team.
      • Contribute to professional growth and collaboration by staying informed on current literature/resources in the field, and actively participating in staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
      • Assist administration with the hiring and orientation of all nursing staff positions, as well as maintain a current list of substitute nurses
      • Oversee the revision/updates of all medical forms every year for the Health Offices
      • Prepare and submit annual statistics on all School Health Service Programs, as well as statistics on state-mandated programs to the MDPH
      • Arrange all nursing schedules to best accommodate the needs of each program and assign substitutes in the absence of a School Nurse
      • Review all accident reports and follow up when necessary
      • Chair Wellness Committee
      • Participate as an active Safety Committee member
      • Monitor licenses and updates whenever necessary for all nurses
      • Arrange professional development activities for staff, assist in CPR Certification of faculty and students.
      • Responsible for seeking appropriate grant money
      • Responsible for system-wide compliance with mandated health regulations. Ensure complete follow-up of referrals for vision, hearing and postural screening and compliance with State Law Physical Examination requirements
      • Participate in the development of an interdisciplinary plan for each program to ensure that students in need of services are identified in a timely manner and appropriate intervention is initiated.
      • Participate in school-based and community emergency planning, professional development activities on the local, state and national level as directed by the Director of Student Services
      • Collaborate with outside agencies such as the Board of Health and local pediatricians and with school staff in health-related disciplines (i.e., health, PE, School Adjustment Counselors) to promote and maintain the health and safety of students
      • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services.

Candidate requirements:

  • Must have a current, valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts.

  • Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited institute required.

  • Hold a MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education license (certificate) as a School Nurse (all levels) or be qualified to apply for this license.
  • Have a minimum of two years nursing experience in child health, school health, community/public health or other relevant nursing experience.
