Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of Island Health (Vancouver Island Health Authority), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous quality and safety improvement is inherent in this position.

Under the general direction of the team leader or designate, serves as a Mental Health & Substance Use (MHSU) Nurse within a multidisciplinary Intensive Case Management Team. Services are primarily provided in community settings, with facility-based services as required. The nurse provides core mental health and addiction services, including assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and client support, in partnership with clients, families, and community health resources. Based on an identified client rehabilitation plan, develops, implements, and maintains a full range of clinical services and client-centered rehabilitation programs.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience

Graduation from a recognized nursing program plus at least two years of adult or child/youth MHSU nursing experience. A minimum of six months supporting clients with substance use issues in a community setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN or RPN. Current CPR certification required.

Knowledge of the Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) model, assessment, treatment, case management methodologies, including motivational interviewing. Knowledge of relevant legislation, community MHSU programs, services, resources, and promotion. Familiarity with other health disciplines and their roles in client care.

  • Proficiency in using the nursing process for mental health treatment, including assessment, planning, implementation, decision-making, organization, prioritization, evaluation, and communication;
  • Ability to administer and monitor psychotropic medication side effects;
  • Capacity to work independently in a community setting;
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a team;
  • Strong interpersonal, crisis intervention, leadership, teaching, and counseling skills; critical thinking and problem-solving abilities;
  • Skill in managing aggressive behavior and applying non-violent crisis intervention techniques;
  • Adaptability to program changes;
  • Physical ability to perform job duties;
  • Competence in operating related equipment;
  • Willingness and ability to travel, with transportation arrangements meeting operational requirements.
