Job description

Overview

The Nurse Extern Tier II is accountable for providing nursing assistance and performing basic nursing procedures to groups of patients within an assigned nursing department, under the supervision, guidance, and direction of a Registered Nurse who may delegate supervision to other team members such as Licensed Practical Nurses and/or State Registered Nursing Assistants. In addition, the Nurse Extern can gain additional clinical practice to enhance their preparation as future licensed nurses.

Responsibilities

Under the continuous direct on-site supervision of a Certified Nursing Assistant:

  1. Interprets plan of medical care and provides input on nursing care plan and assists in the following provided they have been deemed clinically competent by their nursing instructor.
  2. Completes the nursing assessment form with oversight and approval of RN.
  3. Provides personal care including bath, shampoo, shave, back rub, position changes, makes beds, prepares patients for meals, feeds patients, and passes ice water.
  4. Answers call lights and bells promptly to determine and meet patient needs.
  5. Collects specimens (stool, urine, sputum, etc.).
  6. Collects input and output and records appropriately.
  7. Collects and records vital signs on patients and obtains and records pertinent patient information per hospital policy.
  8. Assists and/or feeds patients (enteral feedings included), provides between meal nourishments, fresh drinking water, and encourages fluids when indicated.
  9. Assists in progressive ambulation of patients by wheelchair, stretcher, and bed.
  10. Administers enemas, douches, and inserts rectal tubes, documenting appropriately.
  11. Applies ace bandages, elastic stockings, and sequential compression devices.
  12. Inserts catheters and feeding tubes.
  13. Applies restraints and side rails to ensure the safety of patients.
  14. Observes isolation techniques and gives direct care to patients in isolation.
  15. Assists in ostomy care and education.
  16. Sets up orthopedic appliances.
  17. Maintains records and reports necessary information regarding patient care.
  18. Prepares patients for surgery and other therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
  19. Maintains a safe environment for patient care.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education

  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Enrollment in Board of Nursing approved School of Nursing Registered Nurse Program.
  3. Completion of basic Nursing Fundamentals and/or Certified Nursing Assistant Course.
  4. Current transcripts and copy of skills evaluation on basic procedures.
  5. Recommendation letter from 2 instructors.
