Job Summary
Nurse Consultants (NCs) play an important role in the case management team by assessing and reviewing medical reports to identify and mitigate risk factors that impact recovery and return to work (RTW).
Application of nursing knowledge, skill, and judgement when providing clinical advice, opinion, and guidance. Supporting the development of recovery plans for an Injured Person (IP) and/or interpret medical/clinical findings as needed to ensure case progression towards achieving the best possible return to work, recovery, and/or quality of life outcomes throughout the case life cycle.
NCs interact, develop, and maintain collaborative working relationships with case managers, return-to-work specialists, workers, worker families, healthcare providers, and other WSIB staff to recognize and respond to complex needs, make, and communicate timely, quality evidenced-based/informed healthcare entitlement decisions.
As interventionists, identify and mitigate obstacles to return to work and/or recovery, resolving issues of a medical/clinical nature and addressing non-medical issues appropriately to prevent cases from becoming chronic. NCs work collaboratively with case owners and Adjudicators to identify individual case characteristics. The scope and duration of NC intervention are based on these joint discussions. The individual case characteristics and nature of the obstacles will determine the scope and duration of NC involvement.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
Conduct assessment and/or file reviews to support the functional recovery case plan, by facilitating and guiding appropriate recovery actions, including treatment/assessment until resolution of recovery obstacles. Intervene when needed with healthcare providers to resolve concerns and promote integration of the worker’s treatment and recovery into the RTW process by:
In specific cases, collaborate with the case owner, Return to Work Specialist, Manager, workplace parties, and healthcare providers on case plan activities and timelines by:
Educate and influence workers and external providers/partners regarding RTW best practices, healthcare guidelines, policies, and processes, including treatment recommendations for the injury/illness type, and the value of RTW in the healing process to support RTW, recovery, and quality of life goals. This includes:
Assess medical/clinical documentation for completeness, correctness, and timeliness, and take appropriate actions such as reducing payment for late billing. This may include referrals or collaboration with Health Services and/or Regulatory Services Division.
Act as a clinical resource to internal staff by providing advice, opinions, and guidance on healthcare-related questions and interpretation of medical/clinical findings related to treatment, recovery, and RTW.
Provide immediate, short-term crisis intervention services for workers and/or their families at risk of self-harm or harm to others.
Remain current in clinical education by participating in relevant sessions, forums, or programs provided by WSIB, and provide feedback on trends impacting recovery, RTW, and healthcare benefits.
Perform other related duties as required, including participation in business, team, or project activities.
