Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, patient safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement in quality and safety is inherent in this position.

Reporting to the Manager of the Cardiac Device Clinic, the incumbent participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating programs/services aligned with VIHA's Vision and Mission. They utilize their knowledge and clinical expertise in cardiac rhythm disorders, cardiac rehabilitation, heart function, and management of related chronic diseases. The role functions as a clinical resource, providing consultation and in-service training to nurses, physicians, program teams, community nurses, and other healthcare staff regarding care and treatment within cardiac rhythm management, cardiac rehabilitation, and heart function specialties. The incumbent also directs staff, assigns work, and is responsible for patient assessment, teaching (both group and individual), and direct patient care, including problem-solving.

Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN.
  • Graduation from a recognized nursing program or related health field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • At least three (3) years of recent related experience in cardiac rhythm management, heart failure, or cardiovascular disease, including education, behavioral counseling, chronic disease management, ECG monitoring and interpretation, and exercise stress testing interpretation.
  • Completion of BCIT Cardiology 4203 or an equivalent course and/or ACLS certification.
  • Experience in programming and troubleshooting cardiac devices per current NASPE standards.
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current theories, technologies, and practices in the specialty area.
  • Understanding of heart failure, cardiovascular diseases, complications, cardiac rehabilitation, change and motivational theories, behavioral counseling, and the relationship between cardiovascular disease and co-morbid conditions.
  • Knowledge of cardiac disease prevention, risk factor modification, self-management, and related resources within the health authority.
  • Advanced arrhythmia interpretation skills, demonstrated by completing an approved advanced arrhythmia course within the past year and scoring 85% or higher on the Cardiac Device Challenge Exam.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team and independently with a varied workload.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Competence in planning, organizing, and evaluating patient care.
  • Ability to assess learning needs across the lifespan and apply adult learning principles in teaching.
  • Facilitation of change and effective communication with internal and external contacts, including co-workers, physicians, community agencies, patients, and families.
  • Reliable transportation to meet operational requirements.
  • Physical ability to perform job duties and proficiency in using computer programs and databases such as Powerchart, Microsoft Access, Word, and Excel.
