Position Overview

Answers calls for a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week telephone health information and referral assistance service.

  • Provides professional assessment of caller's need(s), basic health related information, assistance with decision-making related to need for professional health care, including appropriate care level and urgency, assistance with resource identification/referral and follow-up.
  • Uses education, experience, approved written protocols/criteria and the nursing process to provide service.
  • Documents demographic data and caller encounter on the electronic health record.
  • Understands and practices principles of client empowerment and health promotion.
Experience
  • A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years in an Emergency Department or Community Health required.
  • A combination of areas including Medical/Surgical, Mental Health and Maternal/Child Health considered.
  • Experience with phone line, crisis intervention and Windows or Outlook preferred.
Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)
  • Graduate of an approved Registered Nursing educational program.
  • It is recommended that, at minimum, staff possess the BLS training.
Certification/Licensure/Registration
  • Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM).
  • It is recommended that, at minimum, staff possess the BLS training.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Fluency in English required, in French desired and other languages an asset.
  • Scope of practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA).
  • Demonstrated advanced triage or assessment skills.
  • Demonstrated basic keyboard skills required.
  • Excellent communication and advanced triage or assessment skills required.
  • Ability to quickly establish good rapport with callers, while accepting limitations, setting and maintaining boundaries needed.
  • Must display a non-judgmental, caring and supportive attitude and understand the reality of being an ambassador for the WRHA, Misericordia Health Centre, Health Links-Info Santé and the nursing profession.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development. Receives on the job orientation.
  • Has a strong desire to learn and try new things.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six (6) months prior to the start of employment.
