Job description

Nucleic Acid Chemistry/DNA Damage/Mass Spectrometry

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Prof. J. Richard Wagner. The position is available from January 2025 (open until filled). The salary is commensurate with that proposed by national agencies and dependent on the candidate’s expertise.

Flash radiotherapy using high dose rate electron or proton beams significantly spares healthy tissue while irradiating tumors with similar efficiency as low-dose rate conventional radiation. Recent results from animal and preclinical trials are extraordinarily promising although the exact mechanism of action in sparing normal tissue is poorly understood. To understand the mechanism of action, the candidate will examine structural and quantitative aspects of DNA damage related to Flash in comparison to conventional radiation. The candidate will develop novel methods to assess DNA damage in cells, isolated DNA and model compounds using methods based on mass spectrometry and enzymatic assays.

Place of Work

The successful applicant will join a dynamic team with expertise in various aspects of the radiation sciences. The candidate will have the opportunity to interact and participate in exchange visits between two internationally renowned research centers. The department for the sciences of medical imaging and radiation at the Université de Sherbrooke is composed of 30 research professors, 16 clinicians, and a large team of highly qualified personnel.

A background in biological/analytical chemistry, DNA damage and repair, with hands-on experience in mass spectrometry is preferred. Candidates holding, or shortly expecting to be awarded, a PhD degree in related fields are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have relevant expertise and publications as first author.
