Job description

Purpose

We seek to appoint an academic responsible for teaching all aspects of South African Sign Language (SASL), including conversational language, acquisition of SASL, Deaf History and Culture, SASL Linguistics, Deaf Studies, the Deaf World, and Deaf Education. The incumbent will handle teaching, research, community engagement, and support the department in achieving its academic objectives.

Minimum Requirements
  • Master’s degree in SASL or a related discipline with at least 70% average.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of teaching or industry experience.
  • Candidates with a Master’s degree should register for a PhD in SASL within the first year of appointment.
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Teaching and administration of assigned modules.
  2. Develop work schemes collaboratively with colleagues.
  3. Research and adopt new approaches and technologies in teaching.
  4. Prepare teaching media professionally.
  5. Create supplementary notes or substitute textbooks.
  6. Select reference materials to supplement textbooks.
  7. Facilitate effective learning environments.
  8. Update course content and develop new courses or modules.
  9. Conduct student and peer evaluations of teaching performance.
  10. Initiate and lead research projects; apply for research grants.
  11. Supervise postgraduate students.
  12. Serve as coordinator, leader, and mentor.
  13. Publish research in accredited journals and explore commercialization opportunities.
  14. Seek fundraising opportunities for research and community projects.
  15. Collaborate with research offices and interdisciplinary teams to identify projects.
  16. Evaluate fundraising activities and prepare reports.
  17. Establish an independent research program attracting national/international funding.
  18. Maintain memberships in professional bodies.
  19. Provide guidance on research matters and stay updated with professional literature.
  20. Contribute to community engagement and integrate it into the curriculum.
  21. Participate in curriculum review and monitor student progress, developing intervention strategies for at-risk students.
  22. Implement policies for teaching, research, and community engagement.
  23. Participate in departmental committees.
  24. Engage in professional development activities, including acquiring a Doctoral qualification.
  25. Set academic objectives, attend conferences, and develop reports.
  26. Communicate with relevant stakeholders.
