Job description

Purpose

We seek to appoint an academic responsible for teaching all aspects of isiXhosa, including conversational isiXhosa, applied linguistics, literature, and culture. The role may also involve teaching at the postgraduate level, covering components of literature, applied linguistics, and language in communication. The incumbent will be responsible for teaching, research, supervision of student research, and participation in administrative and citizenship activities at Sol Plaatje University.

Minimum Requirements
  • Master’s degree in isiXhosa or a related discipline with a minimum average of 70%.
  • At least two (2) years of teaching or industry experience.
  • Candidates with a master’s degree should register for a PhD in isiXhosa/African Languages within the first year of appointment.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaching and administration of modules.
  • Develop work schemes collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Research and incorporate new approaches and technology in teaching.
  • Prepare teaching media and notes to supplement textbooks.
  • Select reference materials to support learning.
  • Create an effective teaching environment.
  • Update course content and develop new courses/modules.
  • Conduct student and peer evaluations of teaching.
  • Initiate and lead research projects, apply for grants, and supervise postgraduate students.
  • Act as coordinator, leader, and mentor.
  • Publish research in accredited journals and explore commercialization and fundraising opportunities.
  • Collaborate with research offices and interdisciplinary teams to identify projects.
  • Evaluate fundraising activities and establish independent research programs with national/international funding.
  • Join professional bodies, stay updated with literature, and contribute to community engagement and curriculum review.
  • Monitor student progress, develop intervention strategies, and implement policies for teaching, research, and community engagement.
  • Participate in departmental committees and professional development activities, including acquiring a doctoral qualification.
  • Set academic objectives, attend conferences, and develop reports.
  • Engage with stakeholders and maintain communication.
