Job description

DeafDots provides “Alerts & News” signed video reports and announcements in American Sign Language (ASL). Launched in September 2020, DeafDots is the first Deaf media news service targeting Deaf Canadians.

Job Title: DeafDots News Writer

The DeafDots News Writer is responsible for:

  1. Following news activities that impact Deaf Canadians
  2. Identifying, compiling, and maintaining a list of potential stories affecting Deaf Canadians
  3. Pursuing news leads
  4. Researching, interviewing, and compiling stories upon approval, following DeafDots news announcer format and length, listing sources
  5. Assembling stories in script format, editing, revising, and verifying information and sources
  6. Locating suitable media—visuals and videos—in the public domain
  7. Uploading structured scripts and media folders to cloud storage
  8. Communicating with DeafDots team members
  9. Sending Thank You emails to interviewees
  10. Updating the DeafDots Interviewee List
  11. Updating Social Media traffic reports
  12. Posting full-length and individual videos to the website, YouTube, and social media platforms according to schedule

The News Writer must be able to write and assemble news stories in an announcer format suitable for signed and captioned presentations, including scripts with visuals and media. Each month, two scripts with four stories each are due.
