Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity on the Northeast editorial team covering Simcoe County, Almaguin, Muskoka, Parry Sound, and the Ottawa Valley.

We are seeking a news editor for this key newsroom role, which influences all aspects of news development—from story selection and storytelling approaches to online and newsletter publication.

Your ability to utilize analytics tools to understand digital readership will guide reporters and help increase story visibility.Let’s experiment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Hosting daily story meetings to discuss, plan, and assign engaging stories for local readers.
  • Reviewing and editing stories for clarity and engagement.
  • Optimizing stories for digital audiences, including SEO.
  • Curating website and newsletter content, recognizing the best placement based on significance, timeliness, and engagement.
  • Providing feedback and coaching reporters to enhance digital storytelling skills.
  • Mining social media platforms such as Reddit, X, Bluesky, Instagram, Facebook, and others for story ideas and trending topics.
  • Monitoring Google Trends, analytics, and other tools to identify resonant topics that drive page views.

Salary Range: $53,445.08 to $63,402.56

Qualifications include:

  • A diploma or degree in journalism or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience as an editor.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage assignments, projects, and deadlines using the latest tools.
  • Excellent news judgment, storytelling skills, and the ability to identify compelling topics beyond traditional narratives.
  • Data interpretation skills to turn insights into effective actions.
  • Proficiency in social media sourcing and sharing, understanding SEO, and online best practices.
  • Ability to craft engaging headlines.
  • Knowledge of Canadian libel law and Canadian Press style.
  • Ability to work remotely.
