Network & Telecom - Radio Engineer

Location: Toronto, ON, CA

As part of the ONxpress consortium, Alstom is proudly working to transform the collective mobility of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas (GTHA) through the On-Corridor Works project. The GO Expansion scope includes new electric locomotives, fleet upgrades, train control systems, network electrification, signalling, telecommunications, and digital systems.

Objective

The Radio Engineer will participate in the Network and Telecom (N&T) design team in designing, deploying, and validating network and telecom solutions. In this role, you will utilize your experience or expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and have the ability to effect short-term and some long-term business goals.

This is a multi-disciplinary environment working with the design, engineering, and commissioning of integrated radio and TCP/IP networks. Solutions utilize licensed and unlicensed voice and data radios, LAN/WAN networks, and back office servers as well as other communication links between locomotives, between locomotives and wayside equipment, and/or between wayside and central office locations:

  • Knowledge of network hardware including servers, routers, and other computer devices
  • Use system requirements to design and deploy networks and virtual solutions
  • Develop testing, verification, and validation procedures as well as execute the procedures
  • Create and maintain documentation including System Functional Specifications and Interface Control Documents
  • Trace system requirements to DOORS
  • Work as part of the Radio team and assist the Lead System Engineer as needed
  • Use propagation analysis tools to design a system that will meet coverage and throughput objectives
  • Perform capacity analysis for a Radio Access Network
  • Perform site surveys for potential radio tower locations
  • Perform vehicle surveys to evaluate radio equipment on train cars
  • Document test results, identify problems and solutions, and communicate with the team
  • Perform Communications Engineering tasks in support of program objectives
  • Understanding of system and subsystem-level requirements
  • Develop & peer review test procedures and documentation to validate system requirements
  • Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures
  • Radio troubleshooting, propagation design, post processing, intermodulation studies, and radio dimensioning
  • Ensure Data Communication System project team members are aligned with the Verification & Validation plan
  • Ensure documents are delivered as per project Documentation plan (Documentation Master List) in line with project Development For Quality Gate Reviews milestones
  • Participate in radio and network design and implementation activities
  • Participate in Installation and Test & Commissioning activities as well as network maintenance activities remote and in the field

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience in networking or telecommunication
  • 10+ years of experience
  • P. Eng certification or in progress

Desired Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of radio access network hardware
  • Knowledge of Link-budget analysis
  • Radio propagation, analysis, and post-processing tools
  • Mapping software such as Google Earth, MapInfo, ArcGIS, Global Mapper
  • Analysis, system performance improvement, and troubleshooting of a radio network
  • Spectrum Analyzers, Vector Network Analyzers, and drive test equipment
  • Radio technologies such as P25, cellular, WiFi, TETRA, etc.
  • Design and implementation of an 802.11 network
  • Writing and performing test cases on both radio equipment and radio network
  • Understanding of TCP/IP and LAN/WAN
  • Knowledge of network security and policies
  • Understanding of system and sub-system level requirements
