Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments and identify risk factors in newborns.
• Write timely and accurate reports of relevant observations including patient and family teaching.
• Participate and attend high-risk deliveries, implementing NRP principles.
• Provide direct nursing care to newborns based on nursing knowledge.
• Collaborate with primary care providers and specialists in care planning.
• Maintain complete and accurate computerized and paper records.
• Promote Family Centered Care and Best Practice principles.
• Participate in collegial sharing of information among staff.
• Contribute to quality improvement and research activities.

Skills

Ability to apply newborn theory and expertise in the nursing care of neonates

Ability to recognize acuity changes and make appropriate clinical decisions

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing

Ability to work independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team

Ability to teach families

Ability to operate related equipment including a computer

Ability to organize and prioritize work in a continuously changing environment

Education

Graduate of an approved School of Nursing

Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the BCCNM

One year’s recent experience in a neonatal tertiary unit

Completion of a post-basic Neonatal Nursing Program
