Job summary

AVI Health & Community Services is seeking a community-focused coordinator for the Nanaimo Community Action Team (CAT). The role involves coordinating meetings, developing agendas, supporting collaboration, and tracking actions to advance harm-reduction and equity-driven initiatives in Nanaimo, BC.

The position is about 22 hours per week with a flexible schedule, offering remote options as needed and a focus on trauma‑informed, culturally safe engagement across sectors.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience in community coordination or similar roles.
  • Experience coordinating community tables or collaborative initiatives.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of harm reduction, trauma-informed practice and cultural safety.
  • Driver's license is highly recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and support Nanaimo CAT meetings and activities.
  • Prepare materials, minutes and follow-up documentation.
  • Support membership with agenda-setting and action tracking.
  • Foster communication among CAT members and partners.
  • Engage community partners and maintain relationships.

AVI Health & Community Services (AVI) is a multi-disciplinary community-based organization, providing HIV, hepatitis C and harm reduction services out of 5 locations across Vancouver Island. AVI provides services to people living with HIV and hepatitis C and harm reduction clients. About The Nanaimo Community Action Team (CAT)

The Nanaimo Community Action Team (CAT) is a multi-sector, community-led table that brings together people with lived and living experience, service providers, Indigenous partners, and community stakeholders to coordinate local action in response to the drug poisoning crisis. The CAT aligns with the mandate of the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions' Overdose Emergency Response Centre (OERC).

Key Responsibilities
Community Action Team Coordination
  • Coordinate and support regular Nanaimo CAT meetings
  • Prepare meeting agendas, materials, minutes, and follow-up documentation
  • Support NCAT membership and Peer Coordinator with agenda-setting, decision-making, and action tracking
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among CAT members and partners
Community Collaboration & Engagement
  • Build and maintain relationships with CAT members, peer leadership, and community partners
  • Support trauma-informed, culturally safe, and inclusive collaboration
  • Advance equity-centered and harm reduction approaches
Project & Event Support
  • Plan, manage, and support community engagement events and initiatives
  • Support CAT working groups in developing and implementing action plans
  • Assist with regional and cross-community coordination as required
Funding, Documentation & Reporting
  • Support CAT working groups with funding applications and proposals
  • Track project progress, budgets, and evaluation measures
  • Maintain documentation aligned with CAI and funder reporting requirements
Qualifications & Experience
  • 2+ years of relevant experience, education, training, or lived/living experience
  • Experience supporting or coordinating community tables or collaborative initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships across sectors
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with project coordination and/or event planning
  • Knowledge of harm reduction, trauma-informed practice, and cultural safety
  • Driver's License (highly recommended but required)
Working Conditions
  • Remote and in-person, as required
  • Flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
  • Community-based work within systems impacted by substance use and drug toxicity
POSITION DETAILS
  • Pay: $40/Hour plus expenses (flexible and based on funding)
  • Hours and Schedule: 22 hours per week
  • Location: Nanaimo, BC and work in the community as needed. May also be able to provide remote option
  • Start Date: As soon as possible and is subject to ongoing funding
  • Hours of Work, Days Off and Work Area may be subject to change.
