Overview

Naval Warfare Technologist / Specialist for OT&E - NETE

Purpose of Role: Weir Marine Engineering is seeking a Naval Technologist / Specialist with current or former experience in naval warfare and naval equipment operations to join the Combat and Control Systems (CCS) team at the Canadian Forces Maritime Warfare Centre (CFMWC). This permanent position based in Halifax, NS provides a range of Operational Test & Evaluation (OT&E) services including liaison with ongoing naval projects and equipment managers, initiating and undertaking at-sea tests, conducting technical investigations and validating system performance / tactics effectiveness, all leading to the introduction of the River Class Destroyer (RCD). The role requires sound organizational knowledge and prior work experience with the Royal Canadian Navy, and involves collaboration with stakeholders within RCN lines, particularly in Naval Force Development. The position combines office work (primarily) with occasional shipboard duties and short travel to other test locations.

Responsibilities
  • Technical Support: Participate in and support technical, tactical and engineering investigations as directed by the CFMWC warfare area; develop, modify, support & validate related documentation and information with multiple equipment Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).
  • Verification and Validation: Provide validation support for in-service, minor and major capital projects; provide technical advice and support to SMEs concerning tactical issues and procedures.
  • Coordination: Coordinate a large number of test and trials activities for new and legacy equipment (ashore or onboard) for equipment and weapons systems fitted aboard ships; manage and coordinate Test & Evaluation activities related to the performance of naval operational equipment and weapons.
  • Leadership: Lead, support and validate complex test and evaluation activities.
  • Safety First: Demonstrate 100% commitment to zero-harm behaviours in support of a world-class safety culture.
Qualifications
  • Mandatory: Eligible to obtain Government of Canada security clearance, which requires Canadian citizenship and continuous residence in Canada over the last 10 years as a minimum.
  • Mandatory: At-sea experience in naval operations including at the director level Naval Warfare Officer (NWO) or Non-Commissioned Member (NCM); preference for Operations Room Officer (ORO) experience. College Diploma or Bachelor degree preferred but not essential.
  • Required: Operational knowledge of military shipboard systems.
  • Required: Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and quality; proficient in technical writing in English and able to communicate effectively at all levels with peers, supervisors and clients.
  • Desired: Familiar with Naval Operational Test & Evaluation procedures.
