Overview

As a member of the military, Naval Combat Systems Engineers maintain combat systems in ships and submarines. They are responsible for the leadership and wellbeing of a large team of highly trained technical professionals who perform systems analysis, fault-finding, and maintenance of equipment to ensure peak performance.

The primary role of the Naval Combat Systems Engineering Officer is to provide technical expertise, advice, and leadership for the operation and maintenance of naval combat systems including:

  • Above water and underwater warfare systems and ammunition
  • Above water and underwater sensor systems
  • Navigation systems
  • Communication systems
  • Command and control systems
  • Data processing systems
  • Electronic warfare systems

Work environment

Naval Combat Systems Engineering Officers are employed on ships, submarines, and at shore-based establishments across Canada and abroad, primarily in Halifax, Victoria, the National Capital Region, and other locations. They lead technical teams, handle technological challenges, and may serve in staff, training, or administrative roles requiring engineering expertise.

If you join the Regular Force, you will be assigned to a base after training, with potential relocations. The Primary Reserve Force offers part-time employment with minimal relocations, typically working one night per week and some weekends.

If you already hold a university degree, the CAF may place you directly into on-the-job training following basic training, which includes military and officer qualification training.

Regular Officer Training Plan

The CAF funds a university degree through the Royal Military College System, where recruits study relevant subjects as Officer Cadets, receiving salary and benefits. Candidates may attend other Canadian universities if approved. Apply to the CAF and consider other universities as backup options.

Training

Basic officer training lasts 12 weeks at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, covering military knowledge, leadership, weapons handling, and first aid. Language training may follow. Officers attend courses at HMCS Venture in Esquimalt, including Naval Engineering Indoctrination and Naval Combat Systems Engineering Applications, with hands-on ship experience. Further specialized training is available in areas like software management, guided weapons, radar, electronic warfare, communications, and cybersecurity. Advanced training opportunities are also provided based on performance.
