The Opportunity : The Telegram is seeking a multimedia journalist to join our team in St. John’s, NL, as a Local Journalism Initiative reporter. Your main focus will be on Indigenous reporting across Newfoundland and Labrador, where you’ll tell their stories and report on issues, achievements and challenges. You’ll also be covering issues and stories in Labrador and in rural Newfoundland remotely. Strong knowledge of Indigenous cultures and issues or connections to Indigenous communities is considered an asset. Driven by the demands of speed and online readership growth, the multimedia journalist must flexibly juggle assignments as well as generating ideas for content to attract and keep readers returning to the Telegram.com daily. A strong understanding of SEO and best practices for web is considered a bonus, as is familiarity with platforms like Wordpress, but support and training will be provided. The position is a unionized job, working with a remote newsroom, beginning Aug. 4. The Local Journalism Initiative program is a contracted position until March 31, 2026, with possibility of extension. What you’ll do :
Qualifications
Our ideal candidate is skilled at writing features as well as web reporting on immediate issues. We're looking for someone who is proficient at storytelling and able to write articles that can condense information in a way that explains or analyzes what’s happening for our online readers. Our candidate is a team player, willing to work with colleagues to do investigative pieces or larger projects, and able to work independently, as this is a work-from-home role. The candidate must be able to generate story ideas that coincide with the LJI mandate to cover NL’s Indigenous community, Labrador, and rural NL. The ability to use digital tools to identify news needs and maximize ways to meet them is critical to the position, as is working closely with the managing editor and assistant news editor.
