The Opportunity: Working in the Sault Star newsroom, the ideal candidate is an enterprising self-starter and team player with a sense for stories that resonate with Sault Ste. Marie's diverse readership. The candidate should be able to cultivate sources, find stories buried in documents, and break news on tight deadlines while writing in a way that is clear, concise, and engaging. Knowledge of Northern Ontario, Indigenous issues, business, municipal politics, immigration, sports, including the Ontario Hockey League, and general news are assets. The successful candidate will spend 50 per cent of their time on general news, especially covering business stories and news features that lend themselves to Postmedia's long-read format. The rest of their time will be spent covering local sports, especially the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL, and they will be expected to file stories and features suitable for Postmedia's OHL newsletter. In addition, the successful candidate will help lead the way as the Sault newsroom adopts new storytelling and web tools, such as long-story features, Explainers, and blogs using Viafora.
