BC Hydro is searching for an inspiring, collaborative leader to spearhead our compliance program and ensure the reliability of the bulk electric system. If you’re passionate about fostering accountability, building meaningful connections, and leading with empathy, this is your opportunity to make a difference. Don’t worry if you don’t meet every technical requirement - we value your enthusiasm, leadership skills, and ability to inspire teams above all else.

As part of BC Hydro’s Compliance Department within the General Counsel and Compliance Office, you’ll focus on adherence to the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Mandatory Reliability Standards (MRS). These standards are pivotal to ensuring the reliability of the bulk electric system, addressing areas like real-time operations, transmission system planning, protection system maintenance, and infrastructure security.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead & Inspire: Direct and mentor a team of talented engineers and technical staff (internal and consulting), ensuring high-quality work and timely goal achievement.
  • Collaborate Across Industries: Build connections with organizations like WECC and other utilities to bring best practices and innovative ideas back to BC Hydro.
  • Educate & Advise: Provide expertise and guidance on compliance requirements, audit processes, and governance frameworks. Develop training materials and offer mentorship to teams.
  • Strategize & Plan: Create risk-based assurance strategies, refine procedures, and oversee documentation to ensure long-term compliance success.
  • Monitor & Improve Compliance: Conduct audits, risk assessments, and control testing to uphold and exceed industry standards. Deliver actionable insights and detailed reports to stakeholders.
  • Support Regulatory Processes: Lead technical initiatives related to regulatory filings, incident investigations, and mitigation planning, while ensuring reporting accuracy.
  • Manage Resources Effectively: Optimize allocation of internal and external resources, providing feedback and maintaining progress across projects.

What We’re Looking For:

  • An empathetic and inspiring leader with exceptional communication skills.
  • A collaborative problem-solver who excels at connecting strategy to execution.
  • A proactive thinker passionate about continuous learning and innovation.

What you bring:

  • A university degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience in MRS compliance
  • 10+ years in the electric utility industry. Preference will be given to candidates with senior-level expertise in Operations and Planning, Cyber Security, and Compliance.
  • Communication Excellence: Strong written and verbal communication, including negotiation skills and the ability to engage with industry peers and stakeholders.
  • Leadership Capabilities: A proven track record of leading teams and mentoring staff while driving projects and initiatives to completion.
  • Strategic Vision: Skillful in team-building and project management, with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and achieve organizational goals.
  • Regulatory Expertise: Proficient in risk assessment, assurance activities, and compliance processes, including regulatory reporting and evidence collection.
