Scope of Position
The Mortgage Banker position offers a unique opportunity for a highly motivated and results-driven individual. This role will be responsible for the residential mortgage business of a specific branch or group of branches assigned. Mortgage business will be sourced from members, branch and contact centre referrals, as well as any lead list opportunities. This role will work closely with the Business Lead, Branch Managers, and staff to meet sales targets and goals. The Mortgage Banker will act as a coach and SME on retail real estate lending to retail banking team members. Compensation includes a competitive base salary plus incentive rewards.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a subject matter expert for retail real estate lending, including complex credit situations.
- Provide an exceptional member experience in all interactions.
- Assist members with mortgage needs, including mortgages, s-loc’s, and bridge loans.
- Offer sound credit recommendations and solutions tailored to each member, including appropriate creditor protection products.
- Meet with members to understand their mortgage needs and refer them to branch or partners to deepen relationships.
- Support members in consolidating financial assets and refer business to relevant team members.
- Handle customer issues and administrative tasks such as drafting documentation, reports, proposals, and correspondence.
- Manage and close all mortgage, secured line of credit, and bridge loans for assigned branches, including referrals.
- Identify member needs and opportunities, providing solutions or referrals as appropriate.
- Act as a SME and coach for staff on real estate retail lending, providing support, education, and training.
- Enhance branch partners' credit knowledge to meet member needs effectively.
- Meet and exceed Alterna’s Operational Excellence standards.
- Stay updated on mortgage regulations, products, and the competitive landscape.
- Ensure compliance with industry guidelines and rules, providing appropriate financial advice and documentation.
- Maintain thorough knowledge of Alterna’s products and services to deepen member relationships.
Responsible for overall secured lending goals for assigned branches.
- Build strong partnerships with branch teams and support departments to facilitate new business transitions.
- Develop and execute sales plans to meet and exceed goals; conduct pipeline management meetings with branch managers.
- Ensure transaction profitability through appropriate rates, fees, and service charges.
- Use existing resources to contact members proactively.
- Solicit referrals from existing members to grow the mortgage portfolio.
- Retain and grow the mortgage credit book through relationship management.
- Participate in local business events to promote Alterna’s offerings.
Expectations / Outcomes
- Increase Alterna’s mortgage book with new sales growth.
- Achieve individual sales and referral targets, including creditor insurance sales.

- Grow the business through existing members and referrals.

- Ensure all credit transactions are documented, compliant, and timely, maintaining high integrity.
Qualifications
- Post-secondary education and 5 years in a similar financial role or equivalent experience.
- At least 7 years of credit experience, including analysis and approval/recommendation.
- Extensive knowledge of complex credit products like secured lines of credit and residential mortgages.
- Minimum 5 years providing financial advice and building relationships, with a proven sales record.
- Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle for travel between branches.
- Proficiency in computer applications such as Excel and Word.
- Knowledge of government regulatory requirements and compliance practices.
