EY’s multidisciplinary Business Tax Incentives - BTI - team, is part of our Business Tax Services practice and specializes in credits and grants related to discretionary incentives, sustainability, capital investments as well as scientific research and experimental development – SRED. We are a diverse, multidisciplinary group of tax, audit, science and technology professionals who work with companies of all sizes in a variety of industries to help them maximize their tax benefits and achieve their business objectives. We’re adding a Tax Senior to join our team in Montreal.

The opportunity

As a BTI, Sustainability Senior, you will develop deep expertise in tax policy and gain a comprehensive understanding of the business and economic drivers shaping Canada’s clean energy transition. You will play a key role in helping companies navigate and maximize the Government of Canada’s Clean Economy Investment Tax Credits - ITCs, including the Clean Technology ITC, enacted on June 21, 2024. Additionally, you will leverage your knowledge of the Scientific Research and Experimental Development – SRED - tax incentive program to assist clients in identifying eligible Research and Development activities that can further enhance their tax strategies. In this role, you will work with clients to assess project eligibility, optimize tax strategies, and contribute to the broader impact of advancing clean energy initiatives across Canada.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone with an accounting degree and a few years of relevant work experience who wants to continue their career working with new technologies and innovative companies.

Core elements of the role include

  • Participating in scoping sessions to identify eligible SRED projects and expenditures.
  • Preparing qualifying expenditure summaries and assisting with tax submissions.
  • Reviewing project cost summaries for accuracy and classifying costs into appropriate Capital Cost Allowance – CCA - classes.
  • Consulting with engineers and aligning technical details with tax classifications
  • Drafting technical analyses and legislative references to support client tax positions.
  • Managing client expectations, delivering high-quality services, and meeting strict deadlines while leading reviews with the Canada Revenue Agency.
  • Keeping updated on trends and legislative developments and contributing to thought leadership materials
  • Maintaining professionalism and confidentiality in client relationships and identifying opportunities for additional specialty tax services.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, law or another relevant discipline.
  • 2 or more years’ experience in SRED orCanadian Corporate tax.
  • A professional accounting or legal credential such as CPA, CPA In-depth Tax Course, Master’s in Taxation or Master of Tax Law is an asset.
  • A high level of motivation and a commitment to learning in a tax technology environment.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with a proven ability to consistently meet tight deadlines.
  • A process-oriented nature and excellent documentation skills.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication abilities.
