Job description

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER. ADVANCE THE WORLD.

At AMD, we believe technology has the power to solve the world’s most important challenges. From advancing healthcare and scientific discovery to powering AI and the technologies people rely on every day, innovation at AMD is shaping the future.

At AMD, we believe technology has the power to solve the world’s most important challenges. From advancing healthcare and scientific discovery to powering AI and the technologies people rely on every day, innovation at AMD is shaping the future.

Whether you’re designing next-gen processors, enabling AI breakthroughs, or bringing leading edge products to market, every role at AMD contributes to something bigger — technology that moves the world forward. Join us and, together, we’ll advance your career.

The Role

You will join the 3rd Party Analog Mixed Signal IP Design Analysis and CAD team, which evaluates Analog Mixed Signal circuit designs from AMD external design partners, such as USB and PCIe blocks. The team ensures designs meet specifications, contractual requirements, and align with AMD's chip flows and design blocks. We also develop tools to improve design analysis, providing insight into chip methodologies and CAD workflows. Collaborating closely with internal teams and external vendors, we identify and resolve issues before silicon manufacturing, helping AMD stay on schedule and prevent revenue loss. As part of this tight-knit team, you'll gain exposure to a range of circuit design workflows, with strong mentorship and cross-training to foster collaboration and success. This role offers valuable experience in ASIC design, verification, and manufacturing.

The Person

The AMD Mixed Signal IP Design Analysis and CAD Engineer role provides an excellent opportunity to gain a comprehensive understanding of the hardware chip development lifecycle, from initial specifications through silicon manufacturing. In this role, you will learn how to perform critical pre-silicon design verification activities, including layout versus schematic (LVS) comparisons, design rule checks (DRC/ERC), and circuit topology validation. You will develop a strong foundation in industry best practices for schematic design, physical layout, and semiconductor manufacturing processes, while also gaining exposure to key reliability topics such as electromigration (EM), power integrity and IR drop analysis, and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. Additionally, you will learn the principles of design for manufacturability and silicon reliability, as well as advanced concepts such as static timing analysis (STA), SPICE simulation, and parasitic RC extraction.

The position also offers hands‑on experience with industry‑standard Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools used for hardware analysis and verification at a conceptual level. You will become proficient in using revision control systems and effectively communicating and presenting new workflows and methodologies. A key aspect of the role involves developing well‑structured, reusable automation scripts that improve the efficiency, accuracy, and scalability of circuit data analysis. Furthermore, you will gain experience leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to enhance automation and data analysis processes, including applications in hardware design verification and debugging, performance optimization, and test result validation. These experiences will provide a strong technical foundation in semiconductor design, automation, and next‑generation AI‑assisted engineering workflows.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Understanding the hardware chip development lifecycle from specification to silicon manufacturing.
  • Analyzing electrical performance of Analog/Digital Mixed Signal (AMS) designs and support integration of the design implemented using deep sub‑micron CMOS technology into the overall chip system/AMD product.
  • Reviewing flagged issues, analyzing the problem, and then assessing if the design issue must be fixed.
  • Developing, investigating, and enhancing scripts and test cases to automate the IP design analysis workflow.
  • Working with 3rd party IP vendors to review and discuss analysis results for design fixes and enhancements.
  • Work closely with engineers within Markham and other AMD design sites worldwide to enable solutions to these AMS designs.
  • Collaborating with AMD internal teams to cross‑reference issues after design integration into the larger chip environment.
  • Use software automation to enhance IP design analysis methodologies.
  • Use industry standard physical verification analysis tools to analyze hardware design components before final integration and preparation towards chip manufacture.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Possess strong hardware and software skills.
  • An understanding of analog and digital transistor device behavior.
  • Desire to develop well‑structured and maintainable scripts using scripting languages such as Python, Perl, TCL, etc.
  • Using EDA tools for analysis and verification at a conceptual level.
  • Implementing analysis automation using multiple programming/scripting languages such as C, C++ or Perl.
  • Research skills to conduct root cause analysis for software and hardware design bugs.
  • Basic experience in using command line interface with UNIX or Linux, scripting, HSPICE, Verilog or VHDL, and interest in transistor level circuits and/or layout.
  • Previous experience with coding AI automation skills is a strong benefit. Basic experience using AI automation systems and the ability to review results: detecting good outputs vs. erroneous AI outputs.
ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
