Job summary

Compass Minerals Canada Corp. in Goderich, Ontario, is seeking a Mine Engineering Technician (Ground Control) to join our underground operations. Relocation to Goderich is required; this is a hands-on role in a safety-focused environment.

You will collect and analyze rock mechanics data, assist in rehab planning, prepare drawings, and support daily data gathering and inspections to ensure safe, efficient underground conditions.

Qualifications

• Qualified Mine Engineering Technologist or Technician.
• 3-5 years’ experience preferred in mining.
• Experience with underground soft rock mining is considered an asset.
• Complete proficiency with Microsoft Office programs is required.
• AutoCAD highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Installation and maintenance of rock mechanics instrumentation in underground excavations.
• Data gathering and analysis from underground instruments (daily/weekly/monthly).
• Inspect underground conditions and draft rehab plans as required.
• Complete geologic mapping of underground openings.
• Execute 3D scanning for volume and measurements with processing/registration.
• Collect GPR surveys and analyze data.
• Assist in weekly mine-wide ventilation surveys and corrective actions.
• Perform monthly audits of underground openings and ground support integrity.
• Maintain and file engineering drawings and documents.
• Coordinate equipment needs with mine operations and install instrumentation.
• Stay updated on best practices and new technologies for safety and efficiency.
• Assist Engineering department as required.
• Perform other related duties as required.

We are currently hiring a Mine Engineering Technician (Ground Control) to join the Engineering team at our underground salt mine in Goderich, Ontario. This is not a fly in/fly out position. The candidate must relocate to the Goderich area.

Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products.

Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.

How will you contribute to the team?

• Installation and maintenance of rock mechanics instrumentation in underground excavations as required.
• Daily, weekly, monthly gathering of data from underground rock mechanics instruments, as well as formatting and analysis of these data as required.
• Inspection of conditions of underground excavations and drafting of rehab plans as required by the Ground Control Engineer.
• Complete geologic mapping of underground openings as required.
• Execute 3D scanning of surface and underground areas as required for volume and detailed measurements including processing and registration of products.
• Collection of GPR (ground penetrating radar) surveys as required, presentation and analysis of these data.
• Assist in weekly mine-wide ventilation surveys, diagnose issues, develop and communicate corrective actions as required.
• Complete Monthly Audits of underground openings for ground conditions and any changes in roof and wall conditions and ground support integrity.
• Filing and maintenance of engineering drawings and documents.
• Make arrangements with mine operations personnel for equipment requirements, and physical installation of the instrumentation.
• Keep aware of industry best practices and new technologies to improve overall safety and efficiency of the operation.
• Assist Engineering department as required.
• Perform other related duties as required.

What should you bring to the role?

• Qualified Mine Engineering Technologist or Technician.
• 3-5 years’ experience preferred in mining.
• Experience with underground soft rock mining is considered an asset
• Complete proficiency with Microsoft Office programs is required.
• AutoCAD highly desirable.
• Strong analytical skills
• Willingness and ability to work in elevated man lifts (up to about 60 ft above the mine floor) is necessary.

What is the work schedule?

• This is a Monday-Friday position, 8 hours per day. Overtime as required in order to support a 24-hour operation.
• This position is expected to work underground.
• If you do not live nearby, you will be required to relocate. A relocation assistance package is available to those that qualify.
