Job summary

Millennium EMS Solutions (MEMS) is seeking an environmental scientist to join the Brownfield Assessment and Development (BAD) team in Canada. The role blends field work (about 70%) with office tasks, requiring travel and extended site time.

You will perform ESAs, regulatory submissions, literature reviews, and risk-modeling with the assessment team, plan field programs, and prepare technical reports while coordinating with contractors.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education/bachelor’s degree required.
  • 2+ years in environmental sciences; consultancy experience preferred.
  • Eligibility for membership in a relevant professional organization.
  • Ability to meet site access requirements including pre-access drug, alcohol, and fitness testing.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Complete ESA regulatory applications and site inspections.
  • Review literature and summarize scientific findings.
  • Develop risk-based site models with risk assessment team.
  • Develop work plans and cost estimates for assessment/remediation projects.
  • Technical writing and reporting on tasks undertaken.
  • Plan and execute field programs (Groundwater, ESAs/remediation).
  • Coordinate with contractors to implement ESA/remediation projects.
  • Track projects, expenses and deliverables.
  • Organize field data and interpret laboratory results.
  • Develop risk-based site management strategies with BAD staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job description

To work as part of the MEMS Brownfield Assessment and Development (BAD) team in completing assessment, remediation and contaminant hydrogeology projects for clients in Canada. This role requires a combination of office and seasonal field work (approximately 70% field/30% office split) with requirements for travel and extended time in an office setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Completion of file reviews, site inspections and preparation of Environmental Site Assessment (ESA), regulatory applications and submissions for environmental aspects of our activities.
  • Conduct literature searches and a thorough review, interpretation and summary of scientific literature to answer specific questions/problems;
  • Engaging with the risk assessment team to develop and update appropriate conceptual site models for a range of projects including complex sites;
  • Developing work plans and costs estimates for assessment and remediation projects.
  • Technical writing and reporting on tasks undertaken.
  • Planning, organizing and executing field programs (Groundwater, ESAs and/or remediation) under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Working with contractors to implement ESA and remediation projects.
  • Accurate tracking of projects (expenses, activities for deliverable and health and safety).
  • File compilation, organization of field data, interpretation of laboratory results and report writing.
  • Working with senior risk assessment BAD staff to develop appropriate risk-based site management strategies, and
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You Bring:

  • Directly applicable post secondary education /bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Experience in environmental sciences with a preferred familiarity in an environmental consulting industry for minimum 2 years.
  • Eligibility for membership in a relevant professional organization is required.
  • Ability to meet the requirements of site access as dictated by our clients, this may include pre-access drug, alcohol, and fitness testing, and
  • Eligible to possess a valid, Class 5 Drivers license.

Other Knowledge and Skills:

  • Familiarity with the environmental site assessment process and environmental industry’s best practices.
  • Understanding of the Saskatchewan Environmental Code and Alberta Tier 1 and Tier 2 Risk Assessment guidance documents and/or equivalent documents from other jurisdictions as required.
  • Willingness to apply known principles in a different regulatory setting or framework.
  • Understanding of the upstream and downstream oil & gas industry, and oil sands industry and commercial/industrial/brownfields environmental industry.
  • Strong computer skills with knowledge of MS Office Suite.
  • Be able to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary setting.
  • Ability to work either independently or as a part of a team interacting with other team members and contractors.
  • Able to meet deadlines and complete work in a fast paced setting and with multiple functions.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail; task oriented.
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic; and
  • Excellent safety attitude.
  • Good oral and electronic communication skills.

Working Conditions:

  • This individual should expect that a percentage of their work time may be at client sites.
  • Individual trips may last up to 10 days.
  • Site visits may include industrial, mining, or other remote locations. In some cases, the field work may include carrying equipment and overnight stays in rural areas.
  • Office or field work requires sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to manage prolonged exposure to computer keyboards and computer screens.
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
  • Ability to at times sustain long hours of work.
  • Occasional interruptions outside work hours and travel to other locations are required.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including the occasional evening and night.
  • Required to walk, stand, climb, bend forward, kneel, crawl, reach and grasp, push and pull objects, lift and/or move up to 30 lb, sometimes over the shoulders, repetitive bending and lifting of items, along with repetitive arm movements.
