PRIMARY FUNCTION
The Newborn Care Midwife (NCM) will support the Women and Children’s Program by planning, delivering, and coordinating care within the midwife scope and standards of practice as a primary care provider in a multidisciplinary team. The role will support the integration of midwifery at KHSC to augment the traditional community midwife care delivery model.
The NCM will be the attending provider to unassigned newborn patients in the postpartum unit, with the support of the neonatology and pediatric teams for after-hours care, consultation and care outside of scope. The role will be responsible for conducting an outpatient clinic service for time-sensitive transitional care after discharge for dyads, such as bilirubin testing, feeding support and postpartum care. The NCM will plan and deliver innovative care, such as postpartum home visits for under-resourced populations and home phototherapy.
As part of a tertiary teaching hospital environment, the NCM will provide learning opportunities and support to midwifery, nursing, medical students and resident physicians.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Coordinates and delivers outpatient care for well newborn and parents for time-sensitive postnatal care.
- Provides primary attending care for well newborn inpatient dyads, including education, postpartum care and infant feeding support.
- Contributes to the expansion of midwifery program development to improve the quality of postnatal care and reduce length of stay and hospital admission by providing innovative out of hospital care such as home phototherapy and early discharge. Support priority populations to access time sensitive care by offering postnatal home visits.
- Provides coverage to the Women and Children’s program hospital services during surges in activity and/or staffing shortages, within individual scope of practice and Ontario midwifery standards of practice.
- Contributes to improvements in quality and safety, participates in any data collection pertinent to the role, and collaborates with internal partners and stakeholders in the enhancement of care provided at KHSC, as required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Midwifery or assessment through a Prior Learning Experience Assessment program, or an Internationally Educated Midwives Bridging Program, or the College of Midwives of Ontario Orientation and Assessment Pilot Program.
- General registration with the College of Midwives of Ontario or Midwife practicing under the Exemption for Aboriginal Midwives, Midwifery Act, 1991
- Evidence of continued education and professional development (preferred)
- 3 years of experience providing prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care
- 3 years of experience providing infant breast/feeding education and support
- Experience precepting interdisciplinary students
- Experience and commitment to working with equity-deserving populations
- Experience managing newborn hyperbilirubinemia including phototherapy
- Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills
- Active staff privileges with department of OB/GYN and Pediatrics at KHSC (preferred)
- Experience with broader Kingston community healthcare systems, programs, and resources for families (preferred)
- Experience working with Indigenous families and understanding of the complexity of medical evacuation with a commitment to moving forward with the recommendations in NICMs position statement on medical evacuations. (preferred)
- Quality Improvement, Risk Management and Patient Safety experience and/or training. (preferred)
- Familiarity with BORN Ontario reporting (preferred)
- Healthcare leadership experience and/or training (preferred)
- Skills including those set out in CMO standards for registration and include Fetal Health Surveillance, Newborn Resuscitation Program, Emergency Skills and CPR-HP
- Indigenous Cultural Competency Training (preferred)
- Anti-Racism Training (preferred)
- Proven ability to attend work regularly.
- Satisfactory criminal reference check and vulnerable sector search required.
