Varsity Tutors is seeking a Middle School English tutor to joined the Live Learning Platform. You can set your own schedule, work remotely from home, and earn competitive pay up to $40/hour while making a meaningful impact on students’ learning.

You will be matched with students, invoice for sessions, and receive payments twice per week. Our AI-powered Tutor Copilot supports planning, with efficient session delivery and engagement features.

Qualifications

• Advanced mastery in literary analysis, informational text comprehension, grammar and writing conventions, vocabulary development, argumentative and narrative writing.
• Ability to guide students through theme analysis, figurative language, essay structure, and citation practices.
• Familiarity with middle school ELA standards and adapting instruction for diverse proficiency levels.
• Able to explain concepts, use multiple approaches, and tailor instruction to individual needs.
• Strong communication and an engaging teaching style; adaptable to different learner needs.

What We Look For In a Middle School English Tutor

Ability to explain theme analysis, figurative language, essay structure, and citation practices while preparing middle school students for high school English and standardized assessment readiness.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem‑Solving: Skilled at integrating reading, writing, grammar, and oral communication instruction for middle school English Language Arts. Guides students through analyzing literature and informational texts, writing multi‑paragraph essays, applying grammar rules in context, and participating in academic discussions. Emphasizes developing critical literacy skills and connects English language arts to personal expression, media literacy, and cross‑curricular learning.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with middle school ELA standards for grades six through eight and common challenges such as literary analysis depth, essay organization, and grammar application in writing. Adapts instruction using diverse reading materials, writing workshops, and grammar‑in‑context activities to support middle school students at varying proficiency levels preparing for high school English coursework.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
