Some of what this position entails:

  • Managing the electronic Material Flow Control System (MFCS)
  • Safely operating automated MHE equipment (such as automated cranes and conveyers), via computer programs, and at times manually, in a state-of-the-art, temperature-controlled facility.
  • Monitoring consistent pallet flow, ensuring problems that interrupt automated flow are addressed by physically investigating and taking corrective action.
  • Troubleshooting and solving operational challenges as they arise.
  • Working collaboratively with a team that values safety, efficiency and innovation.
  • Climbing ladders up to 120ft (with safety harness).
  • Mechanical adjustments and/or corrections.

Shifts: 12hr/Days/rotating

Reports To: Maintenance Manager


Position Overview

A System Operator ensures the smooth and efficient operation of the facility by monitoring and managing the electronic Material Flow Control System (MFCS) and physically addressing mechanical and other issues within our Material Handling Equipment (MHE) systems.

This role requires proactive monitoring, quick response to incidents, and effective troubleshooting skills to minimize downtime and maintain optimal system performance.

This individual will consistently contribute to NewCold’s key performance areas, customer satisfaction, productivity, and accuracy while maintaining a positive work environment. They will uphold our safety culture and ensure that a positive attitude to Health & Safety is embedded within the team.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Pallet flow and automated processes are controlled and executed according to plan
  • Any issues with the MFCS are resolved in a safe and timely manner
  • Responsible for the proper, complete and safe operation of the automated material flow control system and material handling equipment in the facility
  • Communicating MFCS problems to Team Members
  • Ensuring the MHE is operated according to SOPs and supplier guidelines
  • Monitor and manage the automated computer-based control system for smooth pallet flow throughout the facility
  • Troubleshoot problems that interrupt automated flow by physically investigating and taking corrective action
  • Manually control the operation of conveyors and other material handling equipment when necessary
  • Notify Maintenance Technicians of any equipment needing maintenance or repair and assist team if required
  • Ensure actions are executed in compliance with OH&S requirements, and all other company policies to maintain a safe working environment
  • Act in line with agreed procedures for ensuring quality of product is always maintained according to customer requirements
  • Coordinate with Planners and Maintenance Technicians to ensure any problems are accounted for and resolved with minimal impact to normal operations
  • Conduct yard and plant maintenance activities, including snow removal and facility/equipment cleaning.
Additional Duties
  • Complete Shift Handover reports
  • Assist in other warehouse activities as required
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work environment
  • Ability to cross-train and provide coverage for team members planned time off.
  • Ability to work multiple shifts as required
  • Work closely with the warehouse team to help maintain an efficient smooth workflow.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with operating Material Flow Control Systems (e.g. automated conveyors,) or Industrial Control Systems preferred
  • Mechanical aptitude
Physical Demands:
  • Work at heights; Must be able to climb 120ft ladder using safety harness
  • Work in confined spaces
  • Must be in good physical condition, must be able to stand 10+ hours/day
  • Must be able to lift/push/pull up to 75 lbs repetitively
  • Must be able to work effectively in -20 Celsius freezer environment
  • Work in oxygen reduced environments; Clean shaven, due to SCBA requirements.

  • This position is considered a safety sensitive position.
