The Opportunity
Reporting to the Track Supervisor, the Track Welder is responsible for corrective and preventative welding of various rail infrastructure components. He/she also supports emergency response and performs track inspection when required. The Track Maintenance Welder oversees welding work performed with the Assistant Track Maintenance Welder.
This is a full-time permanent opportunity with primary work locations on or about Metrolinx’s Newmarket Subdivision from downtown Toronto up to Barrie, Ontario, and Metrolinx’s Weston subdivision from downtown Toronto up to Brampton, Ontario.
Key Responsibilities and Functions
Leadership :
- Promote Siemens’ safety culture and ensure compliance with standards and policies;
- Act as an ambassador of Siemens when interacting with customers, suppliers, and employees;
- Report and escalate all accidents/incidents and participate in investigation and review processes;
- Model safety, quality of work, and operational efficiency.
Track Welding Coordination :
- Perform track welding and repair according to established standards and procedures;
- Supervise, develop, and lead the Assistant Track Welder to ensure quality and safety;
- Coordinate and execute various welding activities, including rail end welding, slotting, grinding of switch points, frogs, and other turnout components, thermite welding;
- Support rail flaw detection testing;
- Clear snow from railway turnouts and key track components during winter;
- Repair deficiencies in the track structure as directed;
- Operate, maintain, and upkeep medium-duty hi-rail welding trucks and equipment;
- Complete work, inventory, and inspection reports as required;
- Perform other related tasks as needed.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Valid Ontario driver’s license (G class);
- Certification in railway thermite welding from a recognized provider;
- Completion of recognized railway track welding program (Class 1 railway or equivalent);
- Safety-minded work ethic;
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English;
- Experience with welding, grinding, and finishing manganese steel castings;
- Experience with welding, grinding, and finishing carbon rails of various grades (3HB, IH, HH, AHH);
- Completion of recognized welding training in Ontario;
- Completion of approved Track Inspection Guidelines (TIG) program;
- Experience with welding, grinding, and finishing repair of carbon steel switch points;
- Rail defect identification knowledge (asset);
- Computer skills (office suites, data entry) (asset);
- Certification in Transportation of Dangerous Goods;
- Experience with oxygen/propane cutting and preheating processes (asset);
- Ability to perform repetitive physical work and lift approximately 60 lbs;
- Availability for various work cycles and occasional overtime.
