Job description

Individually we are people, but together we are Aviva. Individually these are just words, but together they are our Values – Care, Commitment, Community, and Confidence.

This Meteorologist will lead our analysis of climate and environmental data, lead research to support the determination of appropriate thresholds that define climate impacts on our business and communities, and work laterally across the organization to implement related action plans.

What you'll do
  • Lead the development and application of technical workflows for analyzing environmental data, including downscaled climate model output, to develop climate projections for several different weather phenomena (e.g., precipitation, temperature, snow, etc.) and to assess current and future exposures.

  • Own the research of appropriate climate stressor thresholds for climate impact assessments and examining environmental data for best-use purposes and appropriate applications.

  • As needed, support the quantitative analysis of exposure, vulnerability, risks, and resilience associated with long-term climate change considerations for a variety of clients such as municipalities and infrastructure agencies.

  • Prepare documentation that succinctly summarizes methodologies and results for technical and lay audiences.

  • Participate on multiple projects and lead selected technical project tasks, delivering on project commitments through effective coordination with internal colleagues, external resources and agencies, and consulting team partners.

  • Contribute to overall strategy and to advance related data-driven analysis and decision-making.

  • Support clients and participate in client meetings to understand and meet requirements for projects.

  • Represent Aviva Canada in the marketplace, contributing capabilities.

What you'll bring
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in meteorology, atmospheric science, climate science, or a related field.

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant professional experience, including the analysis of downscaled climate model output and other environmental data, and advising hazard and impact analyses through climate data.

Advanced understanding of:
  • The physical processes causing climate change;

  • The global climate models included therein (including their strengths and weaknesses), and climate scenarios;

  • Different climate model downscaling methodologies and datasets, including their strengths and weaknesses, and the ability to select contextually appropriate climate data on a project basis;

  • The use of statistics and probability theory in the context of climatology;

  • The uncertainties associated with climate modeling and application of bias-correction/calibration in models;

  • The virtues of a scenario-based approach to decision-making and the role of climate models in decision-making;

  • The relationships between climate change and sea level rise and how sea level rise projections vary given different climate scenarios;

  • The state of climate science research.

What you'll get
  • Compelling rewards package including base compensation, eligibility for annual bonus, retirement savings, share plan, health benefits, personal wellness, and volunteer opportunities.

  • Outstanding Career Development opportunities.

  • We’ll support your professional development education.

  • Competitive vacation package with the option to purchase 5 extra days off per year.

  • Employee driven programs focused on gender, LGBTQ+, origins, diversity and inclusion.

  • Corporate wellness programs to support our employees’ physical and mental health.

  • Hybrid flexible work model.
