Mentor (Ototema for Youth in Conflict with the Law)

Organizational Description: Established in 1969, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg is a registered charity located on Treaty One Territory in Downtown Winnipeg. For over 50 years, we have facilitated youth mentoring programs that inspire and empower children and youth to reach their potential, both as individuals and citizens.

Description of Duties: Ototema is a program focused on friendship and restorative justice. Mentors are matched in a one-to-one relationship with youth in conflict with the law or at risk of becoming involved. The program encourages youth to engage with their communities and make better choices by demonstrating community care.

Youth participants are aged 7-18 and participate voluntarily. They may be referred from the MB Turnabout prevention program, on probation, or incarcerated at the Manitoba Youth Centre for non-violent offenses.

Mentors are interested in alternative justice models or believe that youth acting out are those most in need of strong relationship interventions.

Skills Required:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Interest or experience in alternative justice models (outside incarceration)
  • Work cooperatively with staff to plan and coordinate activities suitable for Ototema youth
  • Provide a criminal record check with vulnerable sector clearance
  • Provide three or four references
  • Respect confidentiality and sign a confidentiality agreement
  • Ability to build developmental relationships with children or youth
  • Trustworthy, energetic, mature, stable, reliable, accepting, patient, caring, respectful
  • Maintain boundaries while fostering a beneficial mentoring relationship
  • Possess a non-judgmental, empowering attitude
  • Promote the welfare and safety of youth
  • Act with integrity
  • Align with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg's values, policies, and procedures

Skills Gained / Related Careers:

  • Experience in youth mentorship and engagement

Age Range: 18-30, 31-54, 55+

Time Commitment: 2 to 4 hours weekly during evenings or weekends, with a minimum commitment of one year. Activities occur in the community or at our agency located at 532 Ellice Avenue.

Location of Volunteer Opportunity: Winnipeg - Downtown

Criminal Record Check Required: Yes (cost not reimbursed)

Child Abuse Registry Check Required: Yes (cost reimbursed)

Eligibility: Open to the general populace
