Job summary

Maamwesying North Shore Community Health Services Inc seeks a Mental Wellness Brief Services Counsellor to provide culturally appropriate assessments, counselling, and support to Indigenous adults at partner sites.

Under the Mental Wellness Manager, you will help integrate traditional and Western healing approaches, maintain EMR documentation, and coordinate care with frontline workers while traveling across seven Maamwesying communities. A minimum B.S.W./M.S.W. and registration are expected.

Qualifications

  • : Must have B.S.W. or M.S.W. and 2+ years related experience.
  • : Current registration or eligibility with Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or OCROPT.
  • : Counselling skills for adults with mental health challenges.
  • : Knowledge of First Nation mental health issues, culture, and community contexts.
  • : Experience with Anishinabek health perspectives and traditional healing practices.
  • : Ability to collaborate with frontline workers and supervisors.
  • : Strong organizational, documentation, and case management abilities.
  • : Proficiency with computer applications and EMR/case management systems.
  • : Excellent oral and written communication; valid police records check is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide culturally appropriate mental wellness assessment, counselling, and support to Indigenous adults (18+).
  • Collaborate with partner sites and Mental Wellness Manager to ensure high-quality service delivery.
  • Foster integration of traditional Indigenous and Western healing approaches in care planning.
  • Maintain accurate electronic medical records and adhere to agency procedures.
  • Travel across Maamwesying area communities as needed and work flexible hours.

The opportunity:

Under the supervision of the Mental Wellness Manager, the Mental Wellness Brief Services Counsellor is responsible for providing culturally appropriate mental wellness assessment, counselling, and support services to Indigenous adults (18+ years) in collaboration with Maamwesying North Shore Community Health Services partner sites.

The role emphasizes high-quality service delivery through adherence to agency policies and procedures, quality assurance practices, and accurate electronic medical record documentation. The Mental Wellness Brief Services Counsellor supports the integration of traditional Indigenous and Western healing approaches by fostering cultural awareness, facilitating access to traditional healers, and supporting culturally grounded care planning for individual clients. This position operates in a fast-paced environment and requires flexibility to respond to shifting community needs, including changes to schedules and service priorities.

What you need to bring with you:
  • Preference will be given to individuals with a B.S.W. or M.S.W. (or equivalent) and a minimum of two (2) years of related experience.
  • Current registration, or eligibility for registration, in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers or The College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario is required.
  • Proven clinical abilities and skills to provide counselling services to adults experiencing significant mental health challenges.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of First Nation mental health issues, history, culture, and community contexts.
  • Experience and understanding of Anishinabek health perspectives and traditional healing practices.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with community frontline workers, health practitioners, clinical supervisors, and mental health specialists.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and case management skills.
  • Proficiency with computer applications and electronic medical record / case management systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • A clear criminal reference check is a condition of employment.
  • Access to a reliable personal vehicle and willingness to travel regularly throughout the seven (7) Maamwesying area communities.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and hours outside of regular business hours as required.
