Job Description:

Position Purpose Summary:

The Mental Health Coordinator supports CRF residents with mental health challenges and acts as a community resource contact for staff. This role involves developing skills to aid in re-integration and connecting clients with relevant community services.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assess clients' mental health needs as assigned.
  • Create and implement mental health plans to meet client goals.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community agencies and resources.
  • Arrange referrals to community mental health services.
  • Assist with intake and discharge procedures.
  • Support clients in developing interpersonal and daily life skills.
  • Intervene in crisis situations, providing support and advocacy.
  • Perform other duties as required, including flexible work arrangements.

This position focuses on helping clients develop skills in communication, interpersonal relations, emotional regulation, leisure activities, and healthy living. The coordinator also encourages community involvement and assists in the re-integration of offenders into the Nanaimo area.

Accountabilities:

General:

  • Help connect clients with mental health supports and community resources.
  • Support clients in attending professional appointments.
  • Provide monthly activity and outcome summaries to the Manager.
  • Attend case management meetings.
  • Participate in institutional in-reach, including some overnight travel.
  • Recommend community resources to caseworkers.
  • Liaise with clients' case management teams.
  • Escort high-risk offenders with limited community access.

Caseload-specific:

  • Support clients in locating rental housing and securing assistance or employment.
  • Assist clients in finding leisure and volunteer opportunities.

Relationships:

Internal: Program Manager, CRF Staff, Clients, Other Staff.

External: Community Stakeholders.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Report to: CRF Program Manager.
  • Direct reports: None.

Working Conditions:

  • Interact with high-risk offenders in controlled environments.
  • Support clients in community settings.
  • Record keeping and report writing in an office setting.
  • Meet with potential clients, including within correctional facilities.
  • Out-of-town travel may be required (up to 15%).

The role requires adherence to The Salvation Army's mission and Christian standards of conduct.

Qualifications:

Education and Certifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in criminology, psychology, social work, or related field preferred.
  • Combination of relevant experience and education considered.
  • Clear TB test, criminal record clearance, and security clearance required.
  • First Aid Level 1 or equivalent, valid driver's license, WHMIS certification, and completion of NHC mandatory training are assets.

Compensation:

Target salary range: $28.63 to $28.88 per hour, with a maximum of $29.13, based on experience and qualifications.
