Job Description

Position Purpose summary:

The Mental Health Coordinator supports CRF residents with their mental health challenges and serves as a community resource contact for staff. This includes developing skills to aid the re-integration process and connecting clients with relevant service providers in the community.

Develop skills conducive to successful reintegration into the community, including:

  • Assess clients as assigned by Manager: CRF to determine mental health needs.
  • Create and deliver mental health plan to assist client in meeting goals.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community agencies/partners and maintain a resource bank of community resources, services and contacts.
  • Arrange referrals to community agencies/partners that support with mental health needs.
  • Assist with intake and discharge procedures for residents as assigned.
  • Help clients with inter-personal skills that promote dignity and respect.
  • Model appropriate behaviour and help develop daily life skills.
  • Intervene in crisis situations, provides support, and advocates as required.
  • Performs other duties as required. This position may involve some flexible work assignment when additional support is required.

This position is meant to support clients in building skills for healthy personal and social interactions in five key areas:

  • Communication;
  • Interpersonal relations;
  • Emotional Self Regulation;
  • Leisure; and
  • Healthy Living Skills.

(Other skills may be applicable as deemed necessary. The Mental Health Coordinator encourages community involvement and assists in the successful re-integration of offenders released to the Nanaimo area as assigned.

General

Accountabilities:

  • Help caseworkers connect clients with mental health supports and resources in the community.
  • Provide support, as assigned, to connect client with various professional appointments.
  • Provide monthly summary of activities and outcomes to the Manager: CRF.
  • Attend case management meetings.
  • Participate with the CRF team in institutional in-reach as assigned (may involve some overnight travel.
  • Assist Caseworker team by recommending known resources in the community.
  • Liaise with client’s case management team to facilitate resources to meet the client’s needs and reduces their risk.
  • Escort high risk offenders who have limited access to the community, as assigned.

Caseload-specific Accountabilities

  • Support clients in locating and viewing potential rental units.
  • Work with clients to secure social assistance and/or disability funding, obtain identification and find employment opportunities.
  • Assist clients seek leisure and volunteer opportunities.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Governance Boards and Councils: None

Internal: Program Manager, CRF Staff, Clients, other Staff.

External: Community Stakeholders

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY

  • Report directly to: CRF Program Manager.
  • Direct reports for this position: None.

Financial And Materials Management

  • None.

Working Conditions

  • Direct interaction with (high risk) offenders in a controlled environment.
  • Support clients in the community (public) environment.
  • Report writing and record keeping in office space.
  • Meet with potential clients (within correctional facilities).
  • Out-of-town travel may be required (15%).

Education And Experience Qualifications

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in criminology, psychology, social work or related education preferred.
  • Combination of related experience and education may be considered.
  • Clear TB Skin Test required.
  • Criminal record clearance through the BC Criminal Records Review Program required.
  • Security clearance through Correctional Services Canada required.
  • Valid Occupational First Aid Level 1 or equivalent an asset.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License an asset.
  • Valid WHIMS certificate an asset.
  • Completion of NHC mandatory, especially ARMATUS abuse training, required.

Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • Two years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the field of Addiction and Mental health.
  • Understand and represent the NHC Philosophy, Standards, and Policies.
  • Possess computer literacy.
  • Calm and well-organized in busy and sometimes stressful situations.
  • Presentable in appearance in accordance with NHC standards.
  • Effective oral and communication skills.
  • Individual and cultural sensitivity.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $28.63 to $28.88 with a maximum of $29.13.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
