Job description

JOB SUMMARY

As a member of a multidisciplinary team, the Mental Health Worker assists residents with mental and physical disabilities to live successfully in the community by providing a variety of day-to-day physical, emotional, and social supports, life skills assistance, information, and resources in accordance with service / care plans; participates in activities; participates in service / care planning, including input into residents’ psychosocial and general health and activity needs; observes changes in residents’ behaviour / functioning and reports concerns to the Senior MHW and / or Clinical Nurse Leader as appropriate; documents interventions; ensures that their practice meets professional and organizational standards; fosters a positive and collaborative working environment with colleagues; is committed to participating in his / her own continuing professional development.

EDUCATION / PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE :

  • Health Care Support Worker (combined Community Mental Health Worker / Resident Care Aide Attendant) Certificate from a recognized institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience in mental health support and resident care.
  • Current First Aid / CPR Certificates required.
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention course preferred.
  • Food Safe 1 preferred.
  • Class 4 BC Driver’s License preferred.

ABILITIES / SKILLS :

  • Knowledge of mental health recovery principles and approaches to care.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to take initiative and work with minimal amount of supervision.
  • Ability to empathize and work with people who may have experienced abuse, poverty, grief and loss, oppression, violence, mental health challenges, and / or addictions issues, and / or those who may be living with HIV / AIDS or other life-limiting or life-threatening conditions.
  • Ability to operate related equipment. Knowledge of computer programs including MS windows environment, MS Outlook, and Word.
  • Ability to assist in developing, implementing and evaluating programs.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate care, and collaborate with interdisciplinary team members in care planning.
  • Ability to work independently and professionally.
  • Ability to foster a working environment of collaboration, skill, collegiality, and enthusiasm.
  • Demonstrable understanding of mental illness and subsequent stigma.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position such as capabilities which are compatible with walking, stopping, bending, and lifting heavy residents using effective and safe body mechanics.
