The Opportunity

  • To provide patient focused assessment, intervention, and education to those affected by serious mental illness and/or acute instability in the community.
  • To provide timely triage, assessment and brief intense management of adults suffering from acute and/or unstable moderate to severe mental illness.

Qualifications

  • Preferred Masters level of education and registered with one of the following colleges: Social Work, Nursing, Occupational Therapist or a related field.
  • Experience with Substance Abuse/Concurrent Disorders an asset
  • Minimum 4 years clinical experience in a mental health setting, including case management, and/or individual and group counselling.
  • Current CPR certification
  • This position requires familiarity with fundamental psychiatric presentations, psychotropic medications, community/home based interactions, the Mental Health Act, and the Health Care Consent Act.
  • This position requires the ability and comfort level to safely engage in community/home based support and treatment of individuals with acute psychiatric needs independently
  • This position requires a high level of competency regarding risk assessment.
  • Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act and Substitute Decision Maker Act
  • Knowledge of the DSM IV
  • Sound assessment skills with regards to physical assessment, mental assessment and risk assessment.
  • Experience in the application of Mental Health Assessment Tools
  • Knowledge in Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Strengths Based Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy considered an asset.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of family Dynamics
  • Knowledge of pharmacology treatment of psychiatric disorders.
  • Knowledge of Regional Resources
  • Must strive to continuously provide a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff, physicians, and volunteers
  • Must adhere to the duties of workers, as stipulated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Must have an ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal) in the English language in order to provide excellent communication with team members, patients and families. Ability to communicate in additional language(s) is considered an asset.

  • Must be able to perform all bona fide and essential duties of the position, which may include physical demands such as moving/transferring patients, pushing, pulling, bending, etc.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessment based on accepted current mental health standards
  • Initiate appropriate intervention, which may involve short- or long-term therapy and treatment, case consultation, engagement and production of Shared Care with family medicine, facilitation of psychiatric, addiction or forensic referral and involvement with primary care and social service supports.
  • Work comfortably with pharmacological intervention as warranted.
  • Maintain the clinical record in accordance with clinic policy and regulatory college requirements.
  • Consult with family physicians and circle of care as appropriate regarding psychiatric care and system coordination
  • Liaise with long term care, retirement homes and hospital, medical and social service agencies
  • Assume an active role as member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Active participation in training, education and clinical supervision.
  • Participate in quality improvement exercises
  • Perform duties as may be assigned by Leadership.
  • To exhibit the ethics required of members in your regulatory body.

More Information

Location: Outpatient Mental Health

Employment Group: Non-Union

Employment Type: Temporary Part-Time (approximately one year)

Start Date: In line with next Hospital Orientation intake.

Hours of Work: 7.5-hours including evenings and weekends. Please be reminded that as a Hospital, in order to provide the necessary patient care, our operations run 24/7. Therefore, depending on the program for which you are applying, it may be an expectation that you are available to work weekdays and weekends, as well as all shifts - days, evenings, and nights.

[Part-Time only] Regularly scheduled for up to 24 hours per week (48/pay).

Wage: $49.27 - $58.51 per hour
