Job summary

A healthcare provider is seeking a Mental Health Technician Nurse Secretary to provide therapeutic services to psychiatric patients under Trauma Informed Care principles. This role includes observing and reporting on patient conditions, facilitating educational groups, and supporting care as delegated by the Registered Nurse. A High School Diploma is required, along with BLS certification and de-escalation training. Experience in behavioral health is preferred. The position is located in Burlington, Canada.

Qualifications

  • BLS (CPR) certification required; STARR de-escalation training within 30 days of hire.

Job description

The Mental Health Technician Nurse Secretary provides therapeutic services to psychiatric patients under Trauma Informed Care principles, following the directions of the Registered Nurse and established treatment plans. Working under general supervision for routine situations, this role serves psychiatric patients across the lifespan through various treatment programs, such as educational groups and 1 : 1 interactions.

Responsibilities include :

  • Observing and reporting changes in patient symptoms and behaviors to the Registered Nurse to facilitate necessary adjustments to the care plan.
  • Communicating effectively and compassionately with patients and families to involve them in the care process, including facilitating patient educational groups.
  • Performing safety checks and environmental rounds, documenting procedures, and updating the Registered Nurse on patient progress.
  • Checking supply stocks to meet patient and nursing needs within budgetary constraints in line with department goals.
  • Supporting patient care as delegated by the Registered Nurse, including measuring vital signs, preparing EKGs, transporting patients, and assisting with ambulation and elimination needs.
  • Responding empathetically to verbal and nonverbal communication from psychiatric patients to meet their needs.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Education : Required : High School Diploma or equivalent. Preferred : Successful completion of Nursing Assistant Certificate and / or Associate’s Degree in a human service field.
  • Experience : Preferred : At least one year of experience in behavioral health or healthcare fields.
  • Licensure / Certification : Required : BLS (CPR) from American Red Cross or AHA Healthcare Provider; STARR de-escalation training within 30 days of hire. Preferred : Nursing Aide I listing with North Carolina Division of Facilities Services; NCPT Certification Level I-II through the American Association of Psychiatric Technicians.
