Job summary

BC Public Service in Chilliwack, BC seeks a Mental Health Support Worker who is self-motivated with strong interpersonal skills. The role supports counselling for children and youth and works with families and caregivers to manage mental health needs.

The position is regular full-time, based in Chilliwack, with chances to contribute to education and services across community partners and schools. A license and relevant background are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology or Child and Youth Care, or equivalent field.
• Experience in child and youth mental health services.
• Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with no restriction.
• Preference for experience in Ministry’s Child and Youth Mental Health programs.
• Preference for experience working with children, youth and families facing challenging behaviors.
• Preference for ASIST/SafeTALK or related training.
• Preference for experience maintaining clinical records and care plans.
• Preference for collaboration with schools and community agencies.

Responsibilities

• Provide counselling support and education to children, youth and families.
• Assist families and caregivers with coping, parenting groups, stress management and communication.
• Assist Clinician with treatment and care plans.
• Maintain relationships with community professionals.
• Maintain clinical and client records.
• Deliver educational services to community agencies and schools.
• Encourage mutual support forums.

• The candidate must provide counselling support and education to children/youth and their families.
• The candidate must assist families and other relevant caregivers with coping and management methods related to their child’s mental health condition, including parenting groups, stress management, problem solving, conflict resolution, effective communication, social skill enhancement, and other systems of care.
• The candidate must assist the Clinician in carrying out, monitoring, and evaluating treatment and/or care plans related to counselling support and education.
• The candidate must maintain and promote working relationships with community professionals.
• The candidate must maintain clinical and client administrative records.
• The candidate must participate in delivering educational services to community agency staff and other service providers, such as schools, foster homes, day-care facilities, child protection, infant development programs, family centres, probation offices, hospital staff, etc.
• The candidate must encourage the development of mutual support forums.
• The candidate must participate in the ongoing planning, development, and evaluation of services such as prevention programs.

Job Requirements

• The candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology or Child and Youth Care, or an equivalent field of study.
• The candidate must have experience working in child and youth mental health services.
• The candidate must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with no restriction or an equivalent license from another Canadian Province.
• Preference will be given to candidates with one (1) or more years of experience working within the Ministry’s Child and Youth Mental Health programs.
• Preference will be given to candidates with experience supporting children, youth, and/or families who exhibit challenging behaviors, including aggression and violence.
• Preference will be given to candidates with additional training related to mental health and suicide intervention, such as ASIST, SafeTALK, or equivalent.
• Preference will be given to candidates with experience maintaining clinical records, case documentation, and client service plans.
• Preference will be given to candidates with experience working collaboratively with schools, community agencies, and multidisciplinary service providers.
• Preference will be given to candidates with experience providing mental health education, skill-building, or support services to children, youth, and families.
• Preference will be given to candidates with experience supporting children and youth with mental health challenges that significantly impact functioning at home, school, or in the community.
• The candidate must be located in British Columbia at the time of employment.
