Under the direction of the Program Coordinator or designate, and in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, the Mental Health Crisis Nurse provides direct and indirect mental health clinical services for children and youth experiencing a mental health crisis or acute psychiatric illness. This includes cases presenting to the Emergency Room (ER), Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES), or those admitted to the Inpatient Unit. Responsibilities involve trauma-informed assessments of mental status and substance use; crisis stabilization and triage; developing and implementing therapeutic care plans; case management and discharge planning; psycho-education and family support; and documentation of assessments and care.
The nurse also screens referrals, gathers collateral information, arranges appointments with child and youth psychiatrists for urgent consultations, and initiates treatment planning, referrals, and liaises with related service providers.
