In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, Values, and strategic direction of Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous quality and safety improvements are inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Nurse reports to the Manager or designate, utilizing a holistic approach for client assessments, planning, organizing, and implementing care based on the bio-psychosocial-spiritual model, following established standards, policies, and practices. The Nurse provides care to clients with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders across various community settings, including detox, stabilization, in-home, and outreach for withdrawal management.

Travel may be required, and transportation arrangements must meet operational requirements, potentially involving the use of a personal vehicle.

Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience

Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN or RPN. Up to two years of recent experience working with clients with addictions and concurrent disorders in settings such as detox, stabilization, in-home, and outpatient.

Knowledge of Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing (2nd ed), current CPR and First Aid certifications, applicable legislation, and community programs and services. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience is acceptable.

Experience working with adults and youth with mental health and substance use issues. Valid BC Driver's License.

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of chemical dependency, including pathophysiology of substance abuse and withdrawal.
  • Understanding of the bio-psychosocial-spiritual model of care and best practices for co-occurring disorders.
  • Familiarity with community resources.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently, organize workload, and prioritize tasks.
  • Leadership skills for facilitating groups, teaching, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Teamwork and collaboration within interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to handle diverse medical, mental health, behavioral, and emotional issues under stress.
  • Physical capability to perform duties and operate related equipment; basic computer skills.
