Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

Reporting to the Manager or designate, the Nurse utilizes a holistic approach for client assessments, planning, organizing, and implementing care based on the bio-psychosocial-spiritual model, following established standards, policies, and practices. The Nurse provides care to clients with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders across various community settings such as detox, stabilization, in-home, and outreach for withdrawal management at different locations.

Travel may be required for this position, and transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of Island Health, potentially involving the use of a personal vehicle.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience

  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN or RPN.
  • Up to two years of recent related experience working with clients with addictions and concurrent disorders in settings including detox, stabilization, in-home, and outpatient.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing (2nd ed).
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation and available programs and services, their interrelations, and their role in community care.
  • Current First Aid certification.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) certification within the first three months of employment.
  • Experience working with adults and youth with mental health and substance use issues.
  • Valid BC Driver's License.

Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of chemical dependency, including the pathophysiology of substance abuse and withdrawal.
  • Understanding of the bio-psychosocial-spiritual model of care and best practices for co-occurring disorders.
  • Familiarity with community resources.
  • Ability to work effectively with seriously addicted and mentally ill clients and their families.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Critical thinking skills for analyzing and resolving problems.
  • Ability to work independently, organize workload, and prioritize tasks.
  • Leadership skills to facilitate groups, teach, coach, and mentor.
  • Ability to collaborate as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Effective interaction with community and facility contacts, staff, physicians, clients, families, and agencies.
  • Stress tolerance and ability to handle diverse medical, mental health, behavioral, and emotional issues.
  • Physical capability to perform job duties.
  • Basic computer skills and operation of related equipment.
