Position Summary

Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Support Counsellor will play a vital role in supporting the emotional and mental health needs of active military, veterans, first responders and healthcare workers with PTSD and substance use disorders. You will work closely with clients, families, and the clinical team to ensure a holistic, trauma-informed approach to treatment and recovery. The role requires empathy, flexibility, and the ability to manage both routine and crisis situations effectively.

Key Responsibilities

Client Support & Therapeutic Engagement

  • Provide one-to-one supportive counselling to clients as needed, within scope of practice.
  • Facilitate psychoeducational and therapeutic group sessions to foster client understanding of mental health and substance use recovery.
  • Assist clients in identifying healthy coping strategies during emotional dysregulation and stress.
  • When needed, provide support in activities of daily living (ADLs) and maintain a therapeutic environment conducive to learning new, healthy behaviours.
  • Be present and engage with clients throughout the facility to foster therapeutic rapport and enhance overall well-being.
  • Support client engagement in meaningful and purposeful leisure activities which are recovery oriented, and evidence based.
  • Support client engagement utilizing behavioural activation strategies and motivational skills, encouraging them to participate to optimize treatment experience

Crisis Intervention & Behaviour Management

  • Offer crisis intervention support during emergencies, providing de-escalation and stabilization strategies.
  • Conduct rounds and regular check-ins with clients to assess emotional and behavioural well-being, reporting any unusual occurrences promptly.
  • Ensuring communication with leadership team and manager-on-call for both awareness and support.

Outings & Transportation

  • Drive clients to offside medical appointments, therapeutic activities, and outings, ensuring their safety and providing support through any challenges that arise during these activities.
  • Coordinate and support clients with independent passes and medical transportation when necessary.

Administrative & Documentation Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date documentation for client interactions, group sessions, outings and onsite activities and any significant events.
  • Participate in shift transitions by providing thorough verbal and written reports, ensuring consistent communication with the team.
  • Assist with the intake/admissions and discharge process, including facility tours, intake/admission forms, and coordinating with clinical staff (e.g., nurses, therapists, NP/MD).
  • Reconcile receipts and spending reports from outings/activities, ensuring accuracy and accountability for expenses.

Facility Operations & Team Collaboration

  • Contribute to maintaining the smooth operation of the center by assisting with various duties as needed, such as coordinating client activities, helping with meal service and clean up, and supporting housekeeping efforts.
  • Foster a collaborative, respectful working relationship with all staff, ensuring equal treatment and mutual support across roles.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Knowledge of therapeutic interventions and group facilitation technique is an asset.
  • Must be able to work independently.

Qualifications

  • College Diploma or Undergraduate Degree in a related field such as Mental Health and Addictions, Social Services Worker (SSW), or Social Work (BSW).
  • Experience in mental health and substance use disorders, particularly trauma and PTSD, is preferred.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and insurance in good standing and be comfortable driving clients to offsite appointments and activities.
