The position leads the recruitment of Canadian healthcare professionals to volunteer and serve with the Christian faith-based charity Mercy Ships. We seek a dedicated and proactive recruiter to attract, screen, and vet new candidates, and assist with candidate selection and pre-boarding staffing for medical roles, including surgical, ward-based, and related volunteer positions, such as alumni who have previously served with the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish Canadian volunteer recruitment targets aligned with Mercy Ships’ priorities and market strengths.
- Develop and implement recruitment strategies for qualified surgical and ward-based volunteers, including surgeons, nurses, anesthetists, and other medical professionals.
- Identify and propose effective candidate attraction channels with high ROI potential.
- Evaluate and advise on volunteer recruiting channels and budgets, including organizing webinars and recruitment activities.
- Utilize sourcing channels like job boards, social media, professional networks, and healthcare partnerships.
- Collaborate with internal teams to align recruitment with operational needs.
- Build and maintain relationships with potential volunteers, keeping them engaged.
- Manage volunteer databases and record-keeping of recruitment activities.
- Assist in creating promotional materials and campaigns.
- Conduct initial candidate screening and vetting to ensure role understanding and compliance.
- Support onboarding and orientation for new volunteers.
- Monitor recruitment effectiveness, report regularly, and recommend improvements.
- Collaborate with the global recruitment team and share best practices.
- Stay updated on industry trends through professional development and networks.
Volunteer Crew Staffing & Administrative Services
- Maintain knowledge of volunteer staffing policies, procedures, and requirements.
- Inform volunteer candidates throughout the process.
- Update and refine volunteer policies, forms, and documentation.
- Assist volunteers with service budgets, travel, and insurance arrangements.
- Coordinate with staff on fundraising efforts and volunteer needs.
- Support administrative tasks related to volunteer payments and reimbursements.
- Contribute to reporting on recruitment and staffing efforts.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in HR, business, marketing, or related field; relevant experience may suffice.
- Minimum three years’ experience in recruitment, talent acquisition, or volunteer coordination, preferably in healthcare or nonprofit sectors.
- Understanding of healthcare roles in surgical and ward settings.
- Experience with HR, recruiting, and volunteer management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Familiarity with ATS and recruitment databases.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize, and meet targets.
- Strong networking skills with healthcare organizations and educational institutions.
- Passion for global health and humanitarian work.
- Core HR competencies: workforce planning, HR technology, organizational change.

Working Conditions
- Remote work in Greater Toronto or Southern Ontario, reporting to the Executive Director in Victoria, BC.

- 40-hour workweek with flexible scheduling after probation.
