Shared Health leads the planning and coordinates the integration of patient-centered clinical and preventive health services across Manitoba. The organization also delivers some province-wide health services and supports centralized administrative and business functions for Manitoba health organizations.

Position Overview

The medical editor listens to recorded dictation from health care providers using computer software, a headset and foot pedal to type, edit/correct and format automated medical speech recognition transcripts and efficiently produce accurate medical reports. The medical editor will ensure accurate distribution of medical reports, and timely completion of editing within the established provincial turnaround times and productivity standards.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience transcribing or editing in a medical/healthcare environment including; 2 years’ experience applying medical terminology, including anatomy, physiology, disease processes, acronyms, pharmaceuticals, laboratory values, surgical procedures and instruments and techniques.
  • 2 years experience working with voice recognition software and use of a headset and foot pedal.

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Complete high school education, Manitoba standards required.
  • Successful completion of a recognized medical transcriptionist training program is required.
  • A suitable combination of education and experience may be considered.

Qualifications And Skills

  • Typing/keyboarding skills of 60 words per minute. Typing test will be required.
  • Proficiency using office software and equipment (including Microsoft Office applications) and Electronic Patient Records,
  • Excellent English language skills (oral and written), including superior spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including communicating and participating using office and videoconferencing technologies (such as Microsoft Teams and email).
  • Perform duties independently with minimal supervision.
  • Understand dictation by individuals for whom English is an additional language (e.g. dictation with strong accents, rapid speech, unusual phrasing).
  • Work with confidential personal health information applying key principles of privacy legislation.

Physical Requirements

  • Periods of prolonged use of computer monitor, keyboard and headset.
  • May be required to travel independently to other regional facilities.
