Medical Lead, Innovation & Development (Comox Valley) (300-1065)

The Medical Lead for Innovation & Development is a co-leadership position with operational decision-making responsibilities. Working collaboratively with the Co-Leader, the Medical Lead proactively engages with others, including patients, to enhance teamwork and facilitate continuous quality improvement of care in acute care services at Comox Valley Hospital. This position reports to the Geography EMD and collaborates directly with the site director and chief of staff.

Main responsibilities of this position:

  1. Leadership: Co-leads activities to ensure physicians and staff work as a team to monitor and improve service delivery; liaises with Division Heads and Chiefs of Staff on physician governance and medical practice issues.
  2. Operations & Quality: Implements processes to engage physicians and staff in continuous quality improvement; monitors team budget and performance jointly with the Co-Leader; investigates team-related PSLS and PCQO events.
  3. Change Management: Acts as a change management champion to support physicians and staff through change.
  4. Informatics: Leads initiatives to leverage technology and data, including electronic health records (EHR), to improve service delivery in collaboration with the Quality Systems team.
  5. Planning: Assesses and anticipates team resource needs, collaborating with medical and administrative leaders to prioritize within available resources.

This position is responsible for Innovation and Development work specific to Geography 1 (Comox Valley), assigned annually:

  1. Year 1: Respond to local needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing local leadership for operations, collaborating with physicians and island-wide work streams.
  2. Year 2: Lead strategies supporting access and flow, mentorship on quality projects, and act as a local expert supporting island-wide teams.
  3. Year 3: Support integration of care between community and acute settings to improve quality, reduce lengths of stay, and enhance patient experience, working with both family practice physicians and specialists.

The Medical Lead is an active member of the Island Health medical staff.
