Job Description
We are looking for a Medical Laboratory Technologist to support our Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Transfusion Medicine Department at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus.
The Medical Laboratory Technologist will perform Immunohematologic tests and duties accurately and reproducibly while exhibiting a working knowledge of the theory, methodology, and equipment required in order to aid in diagnosis and management of a patient.
In this role you will :
- Perform procedures related to reception, documentation, and storage of specimens
- Perform procedures related to ABO grouping, Rh, antibody screening, and cross matching blood
- Perform procedures related to prenatal testing, new-born testing, and paternal phenotyping
- Perform antibody identification procedures
- Perform procedures related to receipt and storage of blood and blood components from the Canadian Blood Services
- Perform procedures related to release of prepared blood and blood components to the patient's ward or other location for therapeutic use
- Write basic interpretation of test results and release these to the patient's physician/ward in a timely fashion
- Maintain worksheets, logbooks, patient records, etc., as required by law and the policy of the laboratory
- Perform routine preventive maintenance of all equipment and operate equipment effectively
- Maintain written records of all quality control, instrument checks, etc.
- Prepare solutions and reagents applicable to the tests performed
- Prioritize work and respond to urgent unpredictable demands for blood bank services in STAT situations. Consult with peers, senior technologists, section supervisor, or section head when appropriate
- Exhibit a cooperative attitude with other staff, flexibility in hours of work, reliability, punctuality, and ability to learn new procedures
- Follow the code of professional conduct of the CSMLS
- Assist with demonstrating procedures to new staff or students as requested
- Participate in educational and informational programs
- Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel, including basic interpretation of laboratory test results and explanations of limitations
- Refer tests to other testing facilities for confirmation after consultation with a senior technologist
- Participate in Quality Assurance Program
- Understand the consequences and impact of errors on the patient
- Accept responsibility for work activities
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Exhibit understanding and practice safe work habits
- Show initiative and independence appropriate for training and experience level
- Perform other duties as requested by the Charge Technologist or Section Head
Job Requirements
Mandatory
- Active General Registration in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) and the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS)
Preferred
- 2 years’ recent experience and demonstrated achievements in Blood Transfusion
Skills and Knowledge
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Access)
- Proficiency in Laboratory Information System
